I want to move to Alaska so damn bad! Unfortunately, I am married.... and my wife is willing to visit,, but having grown up in Minnesota during her teen years, she has had enough with the deep snow, shoveling, icy roads, etc.. I have this tiny little hope that if I do ever get her up there, and she sees it with her own eyes, she'll understand. I was fortunate enough to have spent a month in Anchorage on a family vacation back in 1978. I was only 11, but I was old enough to be completely awed by it's beauty, and those memories will never leave me.

The realtor just came and put his sign in the yard. I’m nowhere near ready. Oh well.

Here's my story ref Alaska. My wife, not unlike yours, is from Hinton, Iowa (north of Sioux City). I first came to Alaska TDY in 1987 when I was working for the Air Force Rescue Coordination Center. Told her then I wanted to try for an assignment here. She wouldn't hear of it for much the same reasons as your wife. 14 years later we're coming up for stateside rotation from 7 yrs of assignment at RAF Mildenhall, England, United Kingdom. I check the overseas assignment listing and Elmendorf is on it, to the type of unit I was most happy working in. Because it'd be a consecutive overseas tour by the rules, and based on rank and timing factors, if I applied I'd get the assignment. Pleaded with her, she relented reservedly (" if I don't like it we stay the four years and leave"). I applied and we moved here, bought a house in Palmer...21 yrs later we're still here.

Don't give up hope.
