Wouldn't a conventional oil filter solve that problem and eliminate the need for the plastic housing?

I would have had second thoughts too before buying! Luckily I didnt and luckily there is an OEM aluminum one which I gladly purchased, to feel better about the whole situation.

Toyota could simply build the truck like that from the beginning.

Its only been a couple of days. Probably sitting in the master tech's backlog right now. In 2000 I warrantied a thrashed transmission, they had my truck for a solid month. :anonymous::anonymous:

Whenever you are rolling around in a dealer's rental, I assure that they have not forgotten about you.

You would have to try really hard to cross thread these filter housings, generally the bigger diameter the threads the harder cross threading is. Also corrosion with the aluminum is unlikely because the threads will likely be coated in oil.

It sure would be simpler, unfortunately manufactures are going away from them to these cartridges. Even our 2012 prius has the same cartridge deal. I don't see it a problem, you just need the right housing removal wrench, and hand tools. Might take a little longer to do an oil change thats all.

If you like creating more trash than you really need to, it's a great solution.

I believe its actually composite. Properly installed there shouldn't be any issue when removed with the right tools.

Not really the only parts of either filter the wouldn't break down is the oil trapped in it and the seals, the steel canister will just be iron oxide in a year or 2 leaving basically what you would have with the cartridge style filter.

Nothing yet. I was immediately provided a very acceptable loaner so as long as I have a truck it’s a non-issue. I’m sure I’ll hear something back this week.

No updates at the moment. I haven’t bothered posting pictures because there is no point. Just envision a robust coating of oil on the complete underside and a residual puddle of oil on the pavement.

Here’s two photos for those interested. One is of the gas tank area and the other is the oil on the pavement after being moved by the tow truck.B7CB9DC2-88EF-4540-8C85-29999E3BFCCD.jpg318B418C-E08F-4E66-B55D-1557A2ADF643.jpgB7CB9DC2-88EF-4540-8C85-29999E3BFCCD.jpg

Aluminum. Quality. Well-made. Love it. My oil changes are now done with zero tools.
