Who makes the best fuel mileage “TUNE”

Do the tunes recommended on this thread require 91 octane or 87? I'm wondering which is the recommended 87 tune to go with?

 

Most tunes are octane learning and will adjust to whatever grade fuel you put in

 

These trucks are crazy, I've had 3 all V6 AT my '19 was impressing me if I got 17mpg my 16 & 21 were/are in the low to mid 20's mpg except in the winter. I would consider a tune just to have better shift points in town and it's so windy out here I usually have to drive in s mode 5th gear. So I don't have to deal with shifting that cruse does in drive. There is no one close around here doing it.

 

That was a fill up and jumping on the interstate, which is relatively flat. 55-65 mph. Shifting seems fine to me…only time it shifts a lot is when it gets hilly towing my moto trailer with cruise on, ect button seems to help. The cruise is trying to maintain a constant speed, if I flip off the cruise it doesn’t shift as much. That is the one thing I miss about my manual, the same 50 mile section of road I could leave it in 5th with cruise on, and only had to down shift a few times.

I don’t hate the engine, more than enough for me, but these trucks could use a diesel. That would cure the lack of low end and boost the mpgs. Of course that will never happen.

 

While there are a ton of tunes out there, and i'm sure all of us spend way too much time dialing in the shift points, one of the advantages of having a local tuner is being able to get tweaks to your tune for your specific purposes. I've got a guy Billy who uses his Tacoma to pull this boxy-AF 3500lb trailer down to the TX coast all the time. I made a tune specific for him to prevent the 5th->4th downshift longer than normal on ECT, so that the infinity small hills on the way don't force downshifts every time. If he WANTS it to downshift, pushing the pedal a bit further does it, but yeah, only when he wants it to. That change alone probably added 1-2MPG on that trip for him, which saves him about 10% on gas. Just did the math and that's about $10 round trip, each time. Since he does it at least twice a month, that's $240/year that the custom tune saves him.... and that's in ADDITION to the gas savings from the tune every other day when he's not going on trips.

 

Naysayers in this thread: just leave it stock, you can get up to 25mpg on the highway!

The stock tune is all about MPG meeting the government EPA fleet demands.

With a 3rd gen Taco MPG is all about driving style and terrain. If you're in the mountains there's not much you can do outside of not driving like it's stolen.

Most all of the tunes are focused on performance and drivability.. just read their pitch/sales/marketing.

 

2016 DCLB OR on 33" KO2s with no other mods! The tire size did deduct 1.5 MPG overall. I've owned the truck since it was new.
The best MPG I've had was 27 when driving in Florida.
I generally get 17.5-18.0 if I'm very light in the peddle (1000-1500 RPM).
Normal driving yields 16.5 MPG
Jack ass driving 15.0 MPG
I'm in Columbus so winter gas makes a big difference.
Winter gas blend- 15.5 MPG no matter how I drive.

 

What I need is a Volkswagen tune! Probably get 38 MPG with that.

What are considering the speed limit?

A good portion of my daily drive has a posted speed limit of 75 to 80mph.

Odd as it sounds, seat posistion appears to have a slight affect on fuel milage for me. I suspect the slight difference in pedal pressure is having an effect on the drive by wire pedal. Mid grade fuel helps as well especially after a few tanks. Driving 55 to 60 helps too, but with 80mph speed limit people tend to do 90+ and driving that slow has its own set of dangers.
