will tires rub?

I've recently purchased a set of 265/70/17 terra grapplers with 17x9 pro comp wheels that have 4.75" bs and -0 offset. I've searched the forums and only seen this tire size being used on 2nd gen sport wheels on first gen. Also my truck is an 04 dc prerunner and is at stock height. Is anyone running this size on their first gen with aftermarket wheels without a lift and if so do they rub unbearably?

 

0 offset on a 9" wide wheel is 5" BS, not 4.75.

I think you're good go though. I've seen folks on here running 2nd gen wheels (5.5 backspacing) on their 1st gens without issues.

If offset is a measurement from the centerline of the wheel and the offset is zero, on a 9" wide rim, the backspacing should be 4.5" if my math is right. How do you get 5" of BS on a 9" wheel when there is zero offset?

 

Because "rim width" is measured as the distance between the bead seats, and backspacing is measured from the back edge of the rim.

So rim width doesn't take into the account the lip of the rim on the front or back of the rim, and backspacing does.

Go out an measure the total width of your rims on your truck. They will come out about 1" wider than the advertised "rim width"

No kidding? I didn't know that. So my tape measured 8.9" wide wheel (widest measurement of the wheel width, i.e., "overall rim width") is really probably a 8.5" or 8" inch wide wheel vs the 9" I though it was? The rims are a set of old school KMC Tarantulas.

 

Yep if you measured the overall rim width to be ~9", then the "rim width" per se is more like 8", and that's what the offset get's calculated off of. (But NOT what the backspacing gets calculated off of)

It's obviously a very confusing way to do it so I'm not sure how/why it got started like that.

 

I never pay any attention to offset on truck wheels, I only go by the width and BS'ing.

 

That's a good thing to avoid confusing yourself, keep it simple...

That's really good to know, because I was thinking I had a 9" rim and was on the fence about running a 265/70/17 BFG AT, 1., because the approved rim width is only 8.5 and, 2., wasn't sure I'd be left with enough sidewall to protect the rim.

ok quick question if anyone is still subbed... im looking to buy wheels today.. i was originally planning on XD Revolvers.. but my suppplier cant get KMC wheels... OR Nittos which i wanted Terra Grapplers.. so im looking at a set of Pro Comps that have a 4.75 BS... and im gonna check out some tires he has in stock.. i have the Toytec ULK in my closet ready to install.. im gonna do 285/70/17 tires.. will the 4.75 be good? i know mostly everyone here says 4.5 BS thats why i came back here to check before i go buy them.. thanks!
