Someone within a couple miles of me has an apple tree, these red cedar trees get these weird fungus rust balls in the presence of apple trees.

I didn't want to hijack the other guy's thread, but I just wanted to say that pretty much every one of my confrontations with "entitled older people" in the last decade or so, has been the result of them either lacking situational awareness, and/or thinking they're right and I'm wrong just because I'm a "dumb millennial"...

Sometime in late spring or early summer of 2011, probably within a month of getting my driver's license, I went to Kohl's to get some clothes for an upcoming family trip to Virginia Beach if I remember correctly.

I was driving through the 2-lane between the parking lot and the stores, and there was this older couple (in their 60s, maybe?) standing behind a Ford Fusion parked at curb with its hazards on and trunk open. I may have been going a little fast, but I came nowhere near hitting these people; Didn't matter to Kojak (Yeah, he was bald).

He screamed at me to stop, and purely out of reflex I slammed on the brakes. He ran up behind my truck on the left, started screaming and cussing at me, and made the mistake of reaching through my open driver's window; I didn't even engage with him, instead resorting to simply driving off. I accidentally chirped the tires, which no doubt made me look like an even bigger asshole to this guy. My plan was to park the truck and go into Kohl's; However, when I parked in front of Kohl's I noticed that Kojak was standing next to his Audi, leaning on the open driver's door with his arms folded and staring me down. His wife may have been sitting in the car, but I couldn't actually see her anywhere.

This guy made me so uneasy that I didn't want to get out of the truck; Unsure of exactly what to do, I called my mom and explained the situation. I was afraid that the guy was either going to confront me again if I got out of the truck, or vandalize the truck as soon I went into Kohl's. Kojak stood there next to his car for several minutes, staring me down; I stayed on the phone with my mom until he finally got into his car and left. I went into Kohl's, did my shopping, and left without incident.

Since the encounter with that asshole almost 11 years ago, I often go out of my way to cut across parking lots instead of using the marked roads closer to the shops, and I haven't had a problem.

As of this post, my truck has just a smidge over 149K miles; I am going shooting with my friend on Friday, going to a car show at Raceway Park on Saturday, and doing another car show at the Oxford Valley Mall on Sunday. There are a couple of more local car shows on Saturday, May 7th but I don't plan on doing a whole hell of a lot of driving that weekend; However, I will be driving to the Carlisle Important Nationals on May 14th and possibly driving down to West Virginia to visit a friend that same day, and even without the added mileage of driving to WV that's almost 600 miles. I am also not including any unepexted trips I take on my days off from work in the next two weeks; As such, I have decided to bring the truck to Pete for a whole bunch of work including an oil change. Pete will also be replacing the cam cover gasket and brake switch, the latter of which I believe has something to do with my cruise control working on a strictly intermittent basis.

My one friend is a complete and total dingus when it comes to basic automotive maintenance; He has a 2011 Nissan Altima 3.5SR that has somewhere in the neighborhood of 135K-140K miles. The A/C suddenly quit working after we had a few unseasonably warm days and I immediately suspected the compressor shot since the A/C had literally been working one day and blowing totally warm air the next. I got him an appointment with my mechanic yesterday, and it was quickly discovered that the compressor was in fact shot and a simple recharge wouldn't do anything. The A/C issue was totally not my friend's fault and simple "shit happens" type of thing, though replacing the compressor is going to cost $1,100; The reason my friend is a complete an total dingus is because my mechanic discovered that his car was about 6,000 miles overdue for an oil change! :eek:o_O

My friend has Aspergers Syndrome like me, though this doesn't excuse his actions in my opinion; I'm an Aspie, and while my truck is messy most of the time, I keep up with basic preventive maintenance and go out of my way to make sure it is mechanically sound at all times. My best friend John is also on the spectrum and very few people I know take care of their vehicles like he does. Not only is he on top of maintenance, but he tries to detail his vehicle a couple times a month!

Luckily, my friend's Altima has the 3.5L V6, which I consider to be one of Nissan's best engines; It also takes full synthetic and I believe that the interval is 5,000 miles, so it's not like this is a vehicle that requires an oil change every 3,000 miles and could only take conventional oil. My friend is a bit lower-functioning than me, and doesn't presently have a steady brick-and-mortar job. He has a small part-time gig selling baked goods that he makes himself, but his primary source of income is doing DoorDash; I am the one who got him into DoorDash, and I put 5,000 miles on my truck in two months last year as an almost direct result of driving for DoorDash myself, so I understand how easy it is to rack up a ton of miles in a short period of time driving locally. However, my friend sees a vehicle as a tool and as I recently found out neglects basic preventive maintenance, so I am going to be texting him every couple of months to make sure he's getting the oil change. He can afford oil changes and even more involved jobs like getting the A/C fixed, but I guarantee you that replacing an engine in an old Nissan Altima will be more than half the value of the car itself and well out of his price range!

I just ran a KBB report on the Altima with a guestimate of 135K miles; My friend's car is mechanically sound with the exception of the A/C compressor that's getting replaced tomorrow, but it is a bit beat up. In "GOOD" condition, private party value is less $6,400; My mechanic would probably charge close to $5K to put a new engine in that car. I suspect that the mileage is actually closer to 140K at this point, and KBB seems to undervalue vehicles (Tacomas, anyway), so I'm thinking that at most my friend's Altima is worth around eight grand.
