No the race bike is down to $8200. But this is how I am looking at it...

    "race bike" pros:
Has brand new tires, chain, sprockets, skids, hand guards, tidy tail, suspension done by WER for a 190-210 lb rider, exhaust, and has been professionally tuned and maintained by a guy and dealer who knows his shit and the platform. I have all the maintenance records since it was purchased (Oil has been changed every 10 hours, brake fluid every 20-30), and valves were already checked at the required intervals so I am good for a while on those now.

Cons: been used for 2 enduros and one dual sport for an older A class rider

    Newish low miles bike pros:
An empty canvas with only 150 miles and 8 hours on it. Cheaper by $200.

5 years old with low miles means EVERY fluid needs to be changed. Brake, oil etc. Still has stock tires so they will need to be swapped, rim locks need to be added. Chain should be good as long as it didn't rust. I will need aftermarket hand guards, skid plate, rim locks and tires AT MINIMUM for what I ride. Then eventually a tidy tail, smaller mirror, new exhaust. Valves will need to be checked in 2 more hours.

It's a tough decision but honestly I am leaning towards the built bike. Mostly because I have much more limited time these days to tinker, and for the year and price the hours are still on the low end of things. Plus after having some really long winded conversations in person, on the phone, and over text with the seller, he just seems like a stand up guy who just wants to ride bikes and is not out to fuck anyone over.

The suspension being professionally upgraded and setup for your weight is a big deal. And it is not cheap. I think I would go with the built one.

Yeah everywhere I read says around $1k for that tuning.

Screw the built bike and go with the one that has barely been ridden. Changing fluids is minimal work and is something that should be done whenever you buy a used bike. Generally speaking, when it comes to off-road bikes you can't believe what a seller says. Only believe what you see with your own eyes. With a stock bike there is a lot more room to upgrade to your liking.

You'd be lucky if it stopped at that. I stumbled across a used Penske shock on eBay for my FJR and grabbed it. Sent it back to Penske for a full rebuild before installing it and they put on a proper spring for my wieght with passenger. Brand new just that rear shock and spring would have been over $1200 and I should still do something with the front forks. Quality suspension front and rear can easily top 3K

I mean I have already seen the built bike, as well as all the records. I already know how clean it is. I haven't seen the barely used bike yet though. While I agree that fluid changes are easy, I'm looking at a valve check in 2 more hours, as well as needing to spend $600 just to beat on it the way I currently beat on my DRZ.

I’m not but had that exact bike and makes me miss it. Don’t realize how fun and easy it is to ride a smaller bike. Compared to my bagger or GS.

Me! But just for commuting purposes today, or really most days between 2 weeks ago and October being Utah. May take the scenic route home though!

Can confirm! My suspension "anything" might be on hold indefinitely. Wife's "new" Prius started blowing white smoke when she started it the other day and I could smell that sweet, sweet coolant smell. Waiting for an estimate on an assumed head gasket job... :crapstorm::frusty:

I did the timing belt on my Forester and I'd strongly consider it if I had the time/energy but know I'd need to set aside a week because, invariably, that's how long it would take me. Also, the amount electrical magic under the hood? Yikes.

I think I know what the final issue was. It was my fault, but I think I got out of a potentially long headache.

I might be getting some cash back match from my credit card soon. I also might be ordering tires or a high fender kit (because I already have tires :ballchain:)
