Your's is a far better WDH design.

The best are full forged steel open piece, not bolted together, to many fail points.

I agree there are heavier and better designs available, I use a Reese unit that is easily 25 years old and rated for 14,000 pounds. I also use it behind an 8600 GVW F-250 and a trailer twice as heavy as the one the OP has.

I am sure that properly selected, installed, adjusted and maintained the unit the OP purchased will be serviceable. The description of the install/adjustment is what caused me concern.

If you have followed this thread from the beginning you may have noted that the OP has potentially more serious issues pertaining the limited payload of the Tacoma rather than a less that super duty WDH.

Wow. Looks like a lot of weight from that front bumper. When I go to the dump with Less than 100 pounds of trash I measure 2640 front 4740 total 2100 rear. 2018 double cab short bed four-wheel-drive. Oh I forgot to mention I tow a 2108TB micro Minnie with my setup. Does fine but I don’t go cross country. It does have to go up on rpm’s to climb hills but otherwise it is fine. I keep my weight in the truck very low and tow in s4 and keep my speed around 65 max. And I have an external trans fluid cooler. 95% of the time truck is the right size - the 5% of the time I tow it is just about maxed but does fine for that low of a percentage.

I'd guess the error correction is this:

Steer axle = Truck Front + Rear Axle (+ tongue weight obviously)
Drive axle = Trailer Front Axle
Trailer axle = Trailer Rear Axle

Can you tell me more about the transmission cooler? I have the towing package on my OR. Someone mentioned it might have a transmission cooler. I will check that out too.

Yes, agree with you there are more serious issues OP has. Just another added one with that WDH.

I believe they removed the stock trans cooler in 2021 so you no longer have the stock cooler. I got a true cool. Check this post out: https://www.tacomaworld.com/threads...th-many-pictures.526283/page-12#post-27074548

I wouldn't say they are serious issues...........more like a little concerning.

The WDH OP has is rated for their weight (appears to be rated at 10k lbs.)

Yes there are heavier duty, more expensive and heavier options like the other one pictured in this thread (rated at 14,000 lbs).

OK, have an idea to shed some payload weight. Going to relocate my spare to the back bumper of the trailer, take off the bed cover, transfer the hi lift jack to Ron's jeep and take everything out of the top box and into the jeep also. While we are traveling with the trailer across country. When we get to the point of the trip where we are doing the off roading part of the trip which is a couple of days 4 tops I will just switch the items back to the taco.

I seriously wouldn't buy a Tacoma for towing anything.

Welp I guess you'd miss out on a lot of fun. My Tacoma has about 50 enjoyable travel trailer adventures under it's belt.

Lemme guess... a landscape trailer with a riding mower needs to be towed with a 3500 dually diesel?

In case you missed the specs 3rd gen Tacoma's are rated to tow up to 6400 lbs with a tongue weight of up to 640 lbs.

I had, for a VERY SHORT time a Jayco 154BH Baja, dry weight around 2,600lbs. Took 3 trips with my spouse and 2 dogs. My 06 Tacoma let me know it was just too much to expect. Sold the TT for $1,500 overall profit, bought a Minnie Winnie 22r. Kept my

I towed a double jet ski trailer with my Tacoma for years, hauled Waterpolo Players, Soccer Players. For those uses it was great.
Max tow capacity vs. real world abilities are a bit different.

I assume the bumper is victory? Just a reminder they are not SAE certified. Very few manufacturers go through that process.

    • Designed to support the loads of the factory tow capacity, but carries no SAE certification, nor is it designed to meet any DOT or FMCSA regulation.
We produce these products in a low volume compared to the OEMs or aftermarket receiver hitch companies. As such, it's not feasible for us to get this product tested against SAE J684 specifications or design it meet specific DOT or FMCSA regulations. So while we try to over-engineer our products with the loads of the factory vehicle capacity in mind; towing a trailer on public highways is at your own risk and we make no claims on the legality or viability of doing so. We cannot offer any recommendations on capacity beyond this. If the ratings of the factory receiver hitch are important to you, we would recommend choosing a bumper that keeps that in place.
