    What do you think?

Any concerns with reliability with a turbocharged four-cylinder and an eight-speed automatic? It's got to be smoother and more powerful than the current set-up but kind of concerned about reliability. I hope they improve the towing and finally get rid of those rear drum brakes

    Oh look, another mod....

This is a blurb from the article:

    Engine, Transmission, and Performance
The Tacoma deserves a new powertrain. While it's currently the only mid-size truck that's available with a manual transmission—we'd like it to stay that way—its six-speed automatic transmission is clumsy and obsolete compared with those in competitors such as the GMC Canyon and Nissan Frontier. The outgoing Tacoma offers an anemic four-cylinder base engine and an optional V-6 that's less powerful than every other V-6-powered rival, including the often-derided Honda Ridgeline. We expect Toyota to package the new Tacoma with a turbocharged four-cylinder–potentially the 2.4-liter from the Lexus NX350 that makes 275 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque. That engine pairs with an eight-speed automatic. As with the new Tundra, the Tacoma might be offered with a hybrid version of its V-6 powertrain. The mid-size truck will still utilize a body-on-frame construction, but we expect it to lose its rear leaf-spring suspension for a more modern coil-spring setup that should improve both its ride and handling.

They expect and say might. That means it's pure speculation right now. Toyota hasn't said they're changing the engine or transmission. Why worry about something that hasn't even occurred yet?

I'm not worried about anything. If it's garbage I won't buy it. Already have a 3rd gen Tacoma

The article contains a lot of ‘we expect , if’s, it might, and it should’s.’ So basically they have just assembled an article of things we already knew , but still without any concrete timelines or specs. They forgot to mention Toyota announced all their vehicles including Tacomas will have a hybrid option by 2025.

Right. I "expect" the next gen Taco to get over 30MPG's & able to tow 12K lbs.

4th thread on the next Tacoma. 2023 MY. should be the 4th gen and said to be revealed sometime later this year. Most likely near the late summer early fall. 2022 MY should be the last year of the 3rd Gen.

Never buy a newly redesigned or re-engined vehicle. Wait a few years for the owners to find the problems and the manufacturer to fix things. Pioneers get the arrows, settlers get the land.

If they go disk brakes in the back they will make it an electric emergency brake

If they go with a small turboed engine we lose reliability

Perhaps a transmission with better gearing would be okay, though if they go 8 or 10 speed... most of these super modern transmissions are glitchy and possibly unreliable

They should just give us 37s from the factory and call it Tacosaurus

    Sweet.

That'll stop all the gripes about squeaky and bowed leaves.

And drop it right in the Ridgeline world.

Toyota doesn't like to change whats been proven to be reliable for them, and its owners.

2023 would be sweet, I presumed it would be later - more like 2024 marketed as 2025 MY - just look at all previous generation's ten-year runs.
