Well shitfuck. My 10 ton press decided to lock up today.
It's almost fully extended, with about 6 tons of pressure on it and won't release.
I drained the oil from the pump, removed the valve assembly, oil all over the place, and the ram is stuck.
Smacked it vigorously with a hammer on every surface, no dice.
    Wtf?

Thinking it may be time to dumb the thing down, remove the fancy bullshit that dont work and retrofit a 10 ton hydraulic jack and make it like the Harbor freight versions.

Or drag it to the curb and put a $100 price on it and maybe someone will do me a favor and steal it.

After looking at HF presses, I bet I can go a full 20 tons. Mine is built hell for stout compared to their stuff. Btw, a new 12 ton press is only $170.
A 20 ton bottle jack is only $55.
Then a bit of steel, a couple trampoline springs, which I have, and viola, 20 tons of metal mashing grunt.
I don't use it that much, it sits in the corner with shit stacked around it. But it's nice to have when needed.
Plus it was grandpa's press. Guess I've gone full circle and talked myself into going forward with it.

Any thought on dismantling a press ram under 6 tons of load without it removing parts of my body?
    Any volunteers?

I can't even begin to get the high pressure coupler off of it, it's locked up tight.
Need to get the ram to release before I remove it.
Thinking of wrapping a towel around the threaded portion going into the ram and take a wrench to it.
Things going to spew oil like a prom night pecker.

Could you pop the ram with a 22 from a rope's length?

It's in my garage, in city limits. But I like the way you guys think.
It was sketchy enough whacking it with a 12oz ball peen yesterday.

    this thread sucks.
So in an attempt to keep it alive, here is me cheating death.
The mess. Fully extended ram, with remote pump.

Here is the cast I was beating on. Pretty sure the allthread was holding the 10 tons back.....

the top is the ram, then a brass? coupler...with differing threads on both...
then what appears to be a house jack assembly, inverted and modified of course. Atta Boy Grandpa!

All the bullshit in my way, grinder, precision antique key machine, generator, etc...

I's like to save the house jack portion as it allows for a lot of adjustment for fitting shit together, but prolly won't happen.

Diaper, and oil after loosening the fitting.

drain pan, Dana 44 heavy duty diff cover. The bitch is an 1/8" thick and is for sale.

    and the ram retracted. :burp:

I think I'll do a complete disassembly and clean the pump and the hydraulic line and maybe see if it comes back to life. That pump also runs a porta power set That i have stuffed behind the press. I think the ram is fine, but the pump is the problem. A 20 ton press project is pretty intriguing though.

Looking for input from you guys on a new build we're purchasing.

House comes with 8' garage doors which I know are plenty for the Taco and my teardrop. The builder just asked us if we're interested in a new option to get 9' doors for +3k. Any solid reason to go to the 9 footers other than just because?

I've got a 7-foot door and wish it was taller. 8-foot is probably plenty unless there's an RV in your future.

If you haven't already, ask about insulated doors. Much easier to install insulated doors from the start than to retrofit them.

That's the one thing I'm considering is if the wife one day decides she has to have a real toilet. Then I'll need to switch the teardrop for a larger trailer.

Also confirmed they are insulated. That's a must, last house we had didn't and the garage was north facing making it fking cold in the winter.

Anything that'll fit through a 9 footer will fit in an 8 footer but the reverse isn't true.
Cost you a hell of a lot more than 3k to try and convert an 8 footer
