dont feed them, they'll learn to associate humans with food, and will need to be put down.

Joe, that was an absolutely touching read to me. I went through that same situation when I was at the scene of a horrific head on collision. In that moment, I did everything I could to just assist and help the many injured. It wasn't till I drove home that it all took an emotional toll on me. The blood, the screaming, the cries and the life-less body I saw, was cemented into my head. What made the situation worse was, I missed my turn that night, the same turn I've never missed in over 50+ trips. I happen to have just missed it that night and drove down to the next light and turned around, that 1-2 minutes of delay, may have saved us. Life is an absolute gift and it can be taken at any moment. I wish you the best in your line and field of work. To me, I'm not built for that. I can help and do everything you need me to do at that time, but the ptsd is what will haunt me. Thank you for sharing that story as it touched me.

100% agreed. It is shocking to realize that a single mistake can end people's lives, either by you or others. I was a victim of a T-bone backing 2004. I had a fully modified bugeye WRX (550+whp) just traveling casually in Pasadena. A drunken woman ran a red light and T-boned me at 50+mph with no sign of braking. Immediately after being struck, I hit 2 more vehicles traveling in the opposite lane, eventually hitting a light pole. The car was a total loss. I was fortunate to be alive, but I severely damaged my left knee and arm from the accident. Still not 100% to this date.

    Just the basics
And what happened to the drunk woman? Probably only lost her license for a short timeframe. My brother is paralyzed because of a drunk driver. It's horrible to have your life impacted by such stupid decisions.

I was never summoned to testify, so I guess you are right. She probably just lost her license for a short period.

Well put, and a good reminder of the fragility of life. As I read this I began to think of the people I have lost because of a seemingly unimportant choice, or a lapse in judgement.

When I was in high school, a friend was killed in a head-on collision with a drunk driver. 16 years old and his life was over due to another’s terrible decision to drive. Though I don’t know to a certainty, that persons life is likely ongoing today while my friend’s life came to an end 40 years ago.

I lost another friend 2 years later. He was a passenger in a truck that rolled over. He tried to get out and the truck rolled over him. He died on a Life Flight helicopter. He was 17. His car sat in his parents side yard for decades. I thought it was odd and wondered why. It began to bother me so much I avoided the street they live on, which happens to be right by where I live.

Three years later, a friend I worked with at General Dynamics and went to school with at Cal Poly Pomona was killed in an accident on Cajon Pass. He fell asleep at the wheel and ran into a parked tractor-trailer. His mom and dad also worked at General Dynamics and he used to drive to work with them. When I was back at work and saw his parents in the parking lot, his absence hit me very hard. His death had become very real at that moment.

What hits me is the wasted potential, and how each one of these deaths devastated each person’s parents, brothers, sisters, and friends. One poor decision, a moment of pushing a situation because you are tired, in a hurry, or pissed. We all do it from time to time. It’s that one time, though, that can get you. Stay safe.
