Just to be clear I do not have a resolution. I do not even have a response as to the extent of any damage to my engine. What I do have I feel is a good reason that would explain the delay. Got to protect my source guys.

Wait, just to be clear, you are going to share your details of a favorable outcome correct? Or will this turn into a Friday thread?

Good enough. First message was kind of cryptic. Hoping it all turns out well.

I have a service scheduled for the Friday before Memorial Day (5/27). I am a bit nervous about it as I assume most of the competent mechanics/lube techs would have Friday off for the long weekend. And if they don't, they might be distracted about the holiday. Services being done: oil change, F/R diff fluid change, T case fluid change, tire rotate, third brake light gasket recall.

No reason to be nervous, just be diligent. I’ve used this dealer for many years for the included ToyotaCare maintenance on several different vehicles. This is the first issue I’ve had. But now I’ve learned to take a peek under the truck and check the oil level before I leave in the future.

One of my long established habits is to always look under the vehicle every time I approach it, also if possible I park with the passenger side toward the building -- that way I can have a visual on the tires on both sides before leaving.

By the way: Most vehicles I have purchased had 100k+ miles when I got them, some over 200k. I have always been extra vigilant about maintenance with these old clunkers & wheezers and they have served me well in return.

I wasn't in a huge rush to get my frame done..in part b/c the dealer told me upfront it's approximately 4-6 months. Most of that was having the frame actually made and shipped cross country. They first gave me a Chevy Malibu as they farm out rentals to Enterprise and they had no trucks, but got me into a Nissan Frontier about 5 weeks later for the remainder of the wait.

I must say the Malibu getting 40mpg city was kinda nice.

Good luck, sounds like you got some inside info, these are tough times finding parts, all being blamed on a pandemic. The dealership maybe dealing with more than yours. When I was at a dealership we lost between 5-7 engines in 10 days including one I worked on. When it came in it was on a almost brand new 3500 turbo diesel and the service manager was about in tears. I had the support of all the service writers reassuring him it would be not my fault. When it was run up, correct filter was on and tight. Plug in not crossthreaded and tight, it was discovered it had a hole in the side of the block and a plate loose. Problem from factory. But for the the 2.5 years there I was a factory certified lube tech. Sounds good but it was mainly an acknowledgement that I paid attention to detail.

When I was still part of the system, there was a well known term for the phenomena of screw-ups being promoted.

It was known as the "the Pond Effect System of Management" simply stated the scum rises to the top.

I'll throw out a conspiracy theory...

Or is it the truth?? Hmm

The dealer not wanting to foot the bill for replacing the engine has, after cleaning up their oily mess, put in a warranty claim to Toyota stating "vehicle presented to dealer with loud knocking noise from engine". "After thorough inspection tech determined [*insert reason for damage found here*] . Tech recommends engine replacement"

Now they are waiting for Toyota to respond.

Ok, so here is the deal, on the down low the op has been informed by some involved that the dealership feels so bad that they are not only replacing his truck, but going to also pick one post from this thread and they also will get a free truck.

OP you don’t need to tell us yes or no, we will know I’m correct when you like this post. Or what if it’s such a good post the op likes it even though it’s not true. Dam

Here’s what I think, they are viewing this thread and going to pick the person with the newest vehicle and put OP in that one. Being as how you have the most futuristic one, sorry Spare :pout:

Good thing it’s the dealership doing this, they can’t read a map so they will never find me.

Not saying that a dealer wouldn't do that, but do you think the trucks maintenance record would be the first place Toyota would look (so they could hopefully place blame on the owner, or someone else, and not have to foot the bill)? I'd imagine they'd realize the truck had a service performed just hours and miles before this claim came floating in.

All that being said, I wouldn't be surprised one bit if it went this direction, but OP "could" have a field day with them if that happened, and he not happy with the extent of resolution. It'd be such a risky thing for them to do, but again, you're on to something here, and I think we could probably all agree it wouldn't be the first time that's ever happened.

I’d be shocked if a dealership chose to hang their ass in the wind like this. Seems like a terrible risk versus reward decision.

It’s not the dishonesty I doubt, it’s the level of risk.
