Is there any way to find out if a truck has been tuned previously?

I bought a 2020 TRD OR MT that had a few mods already done to it and I would not be surprised if a tune was one of them but I have no way of knowing since I bought from a dealer and did not get a chance to ask previous owner any questions about the truck.

 

If we hook it up and the vin requires credits to unlock then it's not (properly) tuned.

If you hook up to a stock tuned truck with VFtuner, you can click read ECU and it will do it. If it was tuned, it would not be able to be read.
If it is tuned, there is really no way of knowing what tune was flashed. I would suggest getting it updated to the most up to date tune.

Thanks for the responses. I'll try and set something up for the next round of Pittsburgh tunes and get the truck checked out.

 

My understanding is the accumulator acts as a buffer by accumulating a small pool of transmission fluid, which acts to slightly delay the shift by hanging the revs. Eliminating it reduces the rev hang which helps it shift better. I haven't done the mod so my understanding of this may be off. Rather than highjack this thread, best thing is to go on the accumulator thread and ask the guys there that know a lot more about it than I do.

So would the dealer have this same scenerio? Please confirm there is no way of them seeing it.

Also does this mean you wont be able to program certain characteristics in the ECU if you had VFtuner yourself?

If an EROM file has been used for your tune, your ecu ID changes from a 89663- prefix to a V9663- prefix, which is visible when checking for ECU ID info.

If an EROM file has not been used for your tune, it won't be found, although the CVN will likely have changed, but that's really only relevant for emissions inspection purposes. Flashing your vehicle with a tune yields the same identifiers that would appear from a lengthy battery disconnect if the dealer were to really dig for it.

 

I dont really understand... is the Pro tune an EROM file?

 

The KDMax-Pro tune and Pro+ will identify like the stock tune by the dealer.
No EROM is used. As of now.

Thanks, and If I get the VFtuner in the future, would I be able to make all the standard changes like changing lighting, locking, etc settings as per if it werent flashed? Just trying to figure that out before I take my trucks virginity.

If you want to tune your truck yourself, you need to start with a base stock tune or a Ovtune 2.0 file. You cannot edit the KDMax tunes. We do all the changes for you, like gears, tires, AGM battery.

 

Lighting, and locking changes are done with Techstream, not VFtuner. So yes, you would still be able to do them with or without the tune.

Dave is getting a few new guys setup to start tuning trucks with the KDMax tunes. Once they are setup and ready, they will be added to our lists and Maps.

The new software update that is happening soon should make everything easier. The license will be tied to the Tactrix Cable and will not need master keys and passwords. This should make it less complicated for someone to get started using VFtuner.

This is all awesome news, thanks to you and Dave for the continued investment and tweaks to grow the tunes and the resources! I hope the v1.6 door opens a nice update(s) down the road and the 2nd gen 4.0L as hoped....exciting times!!

 

I bought a 2022 Tacoma SR5 RWD last february. After the break-in, I hated how the truck shifts specially when you want to overtake and the truck downshifts. It was downshifting two gears down and would rev too high that the truck won't run faster anymore because it lowered the gear too much instead of just one gear down. I was even planning to trade it back in to a 2022 tundra but I decided to give this tuning a try. So I got my own OV-TUNER and tried several tuning files. After more than $1000 dollar spent (buying OV-tuner and tune files) on this thing Here are my comments for the TUNES that I tried:

1. Valley Runner 2.0 - Idling is great, shifts to 5th and 6th on highway making the engine more relaxed. However, I didn't feel that much power when you need
to downshift and overtake on some cars. I enjoyed the shift lock on ECT mode. I reached the maximum of 17-18 miles MPG on gas.

2. Nexus +P Premium - You can dramatically feel the power increase (Massive Difference) specially when you need to overtake on some cars. However, on the lower speeds. There is a spot when you are on a certain gear (2nd or 3rd I think) that you would feel the engine is being flooded with fuel and would jerk before the engine runs smoothly on acceleration. I reached 15 MPG maximum on this tune

3. KDMAX Pro+ (SPORT) - It's a great tune, engine is quiet on idle. upshift and downshift is good. However, I noticed that there is little bit of jerk when it upshifts. But I think this tune is perfect for tacos with bigger tires because on how it holds the gear longer both acceleration and deceleration. 18 MPG maximum reached on gas.

3. KDMAX Pro (SPORT) - This is the PERFECT tune for me. Engine is quiet as f*c* when idling. The ticking noise that sounds like a lifter issue was even gone. Gives great power on acceleration and downshifting to pickup speed Cruise control Handling is also perfect. Shifting through gears is REAALLYYY SMOOOOTH. It also had the best gas mileage reaching the maximum of 21MPG.

I hope they can make a KDMAX PRO (SPORT) with shift lock on ECT so you can have that true MANUAL MODE shifting when you just want to run the hell out of your truck.
