I like it when Walmart says sale price and you peel the sticker back and it’s like 15% less under the sticker.

I pulled my truck around to fill up and this guy rolled in. He got a 12 pack of bud light and stuffed it in his jacket

When I got my big saw years ago I got the same style helmet with the screen and muffs attached. The neighbor (a master with a chainsaw) had one and I asked him about dust coming through the screen. He said "if you are getting dust through the screen you need to sharpen your chain".

Very nice piece of gear - it doesn't distract you, fall off, or fog up.

Well fellers, today on Past Tech with Rusty we aren't working on something too old, my 2006 Zero Turn mower. It was making the well storied "funny noise".

This pulley (and an identical friend) made a zing noise, bad bearing. We can see it is a common 6203RS bearing, only a few dollars. But how to get it out? It is spot welded together...

    KIMG2120.jpg

First we press the adapter out, some sockets work well for this. If you don't have an arbor press you can use a vice or really just tap with a hammer, it isn't a real tight fit.

    KIMG2121.jpg

    In process photo.

    KIMG2122.jpg

And success! When working with (good) bearings the important part to make sure the bearing is supported properly so it isn't damaged.
But still, it is spot welded together...

    KIMG2123.jpg

However a 1950's Walker-Turner drill press and a 1/4" bit can fix that problem for us!

After drilling all the spot welds out a putty knife assists in splitting the halves.
The old bearing will just tap out, it is junk so we don't need to be too careful, just don't bend the pulley.

    KIMG2124.jpg

Using the arbor press to seat the new bearing, again it isn't a real tight fit so the press isn't 100% needed, just nice to have.

    KIMG2125.jpg

Smoothly pressing the 2 halves back together, notice the bolts to keep the holes aligned.

    KIMG2126.jpg

A butt ton of bolts with nylock nuts replace the spot welds, probably didn't need them all -- but bolts are cheap. You can see the insert is already pressed back in place. The bolts are where the original spot welds were, 8 for 8. The two open holes were already there, probably for assembly in the factory.

A new pulley is $30 or more, with a $5 bearing, $1 hardware and a 1/2 hour you are ready to mow and now it is repairable in a few minutes.

    KIMG2127.jpg

Make sure you press the insert in on the side where the protruding bolts aren't going to hit anything. ;)

This might have been more of the "funny noise", deck bearing.

Do you pop the shields off and add a bit more grease to the bearings?

I'm always amazed at how little grease is in the new bearings.

I had a mower deck pulley same thing. Cheaper for me to just replace it.. Nice work.

Didn't think of it at the time, the originals lasted 15 years and they were a China bearing. :notsure:
