Battery

About to do some maintenance as I'm going on a 200 mile off road trip this summer. My 2017 Toyota has around 70k miles on it. So time to replace the battery. I was considering the Diehard Platinum AGM, but then was wondering about marine batteries. Would really like a 4 post battery. Just wondering what other people are using or if any suggestions other than the Diehard.

X2 AGM from batteries plus. Theyre rebranded Northstars and mine has been flawless in the blistering Utah summers and frigid winters very far off the beaten path for several years now.

In my opinion a Marine battery doesn't make a good starter battery. They're a dual purpose, somewhere between starter (high amp) and constant draw (deep discharge). As a result they have a shortened life span- it isn't too long before the already-underpowered cranking amps deminishes below the minimum threshold to turn the Tacoma's starter.

Me, Id keep it between a sealed and an AGM. If it were me, I'd do a sealed lead acid. Less maintenance and cheaper.

Edit: also, always keep a portable jump pack on board. Great for both self rescue and from protecting your truck's oversensitive electronics when you go to help others. Seems like every other person I've ever jumped didn't have the sense to hold the clamps apart...

The KISS principle usually works pretty well for me. So I put a Walmart Everstart Platinum 24F AGM in both my 1st gen and 3rd gen Tacos ($150 each + tax). Both Tacos have large battery killing winches on them. But the 1st gen is my hunting truck so sees quite a bit of hard winching every year. Had a tornado roar thru in early April while I was out turkey hunting and block my path out of the woods. It took 3 days to cut and winch my way out with the 1st gen Taco. The Everstart Platinum 24F AGM battery and Stihl chainsaws accomplished the task with flying colors. But this old fart had to go to the chiropractor for a bit of mtx after that little adventure. HTH

To be fair, I can see how a 200 mile long road trip in a third gen would have someone nervous; they’re not like our 1st gens. I didn’t bat an eye before driving my truck from California to Vermont and back a few summers ago. A mere 6,000 mile round trip without so much as a burnt out tail light. Our thoughts are with you OP.

Noco GB70 has been flawless and a nice addition to my truck's loadout. Prob jumped 30 vehicles in the past few years and I think I have charged it all of maybe twice.

 

I’ve got cables but no portable power pack. I like that idea too even though the only time I use my cables is to help someone else out. 60% of the time, it’s a woman every time.

 

If you spend any time in the backcountry get a power pack. They don't break the bank and having the ability to jump yourself is worth the price of admission. I've had mine for 6 years and only needed it once after a few too many beers the night before. I was solo and about 12 miles from the nearest paved road. The $100 bucks I paid for that thing sure as shit beat hiking out 12 miles and looking like an idiot. lol

 

Seconded. Just be careful with them - if the battery gets over discharged or overheated, the lithium battery packs in them can puff up and become a fire hazard. Nobody wants a backcountry carbeque.

 

Walmart is the battery leader for price and quality. Johnson Controls makes their batteries.

 

X2 batteries plus group 27f...chevy diode...remember 3rd generation have to have a tune for battery voltage ...

 

Be careful buying without checking the date code. A good deal isn’t that good if the battery has been sitting around for a year or more.
