Just to clarify, I didn’t mean to imply using a shotgun with pistol grips is inaccurate. I personally have and practice with such a gun. I too can blast a milk jug to hell and back firing from the hip. Mine is an old Mossberg 500 that I replaced the stock with a pistol grip. I just meant you really don’t aim that gun like you do a rifle. Even if you hold it chest high and sight
along the barrel you are not really aiming , you are more accurately pointing. Anyway I agree completely with your post.
I think this thread has reached its conclusion. I’m done with it. Maybe we can start a what’s the best oil thread:rofl:

Despite the un-tacticalness of a scattergun these days, they are my preferred long gun in a world where I cannot utilize suppressive fire.

They have significant trade offs, namely keeping it fed. Reloading is an art that I have never seen done well in any movie. The John Wick series is cool but his reloading technique is from the competition world and not fit for 2 way ranges.

Get yourself a shotgun and go to town. Everyone should have one. Stay in the Mossberg/Remington families for a cost effective pump gun and you can't go wrong. I bought a maverick 88 for $170 18 years go and it still runs great. There are a ton of barrel and sight options out there. I have had single bead, double bead, ghost ring, rifle sights and Eotechs.

Looks like you had fun, I feel a shotgun should be a part of any collection regardless of gauge, brand, and action.

For a fun time try a magnum slug. You'll only need one.

I fired a Mossberg, but I'm told that the 870 is a great weapon and that would be my first choice; My friend has one that he bought new. Did you buy yours at a police auction?

There's a local shop (Lawmen in Delaware) that received several 870 Police from Delaware Law Enforcement a couple of years ago. I was fortunate to walk in and see their inventory and asked why they had so many.

Anyhow, I need to get my conceal/carry license since I'm a DE resident and start going to firing range.

Only problem, I need to find a friend who has a country farm big enough where I can shoot the Remington and get the real-feel of this bad boy!

Biggest thing to me between the Mossberg and an 870. 1/4 rack the slide of an 870 and you can poke the round back into the tube and then fully open the slide ejecting the one from the chamber. Then drop in one of your choice into the chamber only losing one round unless the chambered round is spent.

A mossberg needs to eject the chambered round and the one fed from the tube needs to be flicked out and onto the ground at full rack back. Losing two potential rounds and extra time.

Another thing is the shorty I posted previously has an 18.5” threaded barrel. I had to order directly from Remington at that time over the phone. I wanted the shortest possibly barrel I could have and retain ability to swap chokes. I also have a Hogue pistol grip/buttstock I can swap on and add the rifled/scoped barrel for some big game action. This setup hurts on both ends. 10 years ago these rounds were close to $3-4 a piece. No telling what they’re up to now. Believe I was getting the Hornady Leverevolutions and they are 325g IIRC.

I've owned a 870 for 45 years and wouldn't consider using it inside the house for defense, 28" barrel. In close quarters a long gun gives the bad guy too much to grab hold of and swinging around in a hallway even with a short barrel 870 provides the bad guy more time and opportunity. My 870's primary use is dove and duck hunting although I haven't been in many years.

Where a shotgun shines would be in outside riot/ crowd control as nothing strikes fear in a mob more that a scatter gun at the proper distance.

Back to the 870 which the beauty of is its simplicity of function and ease of stripping down for cleaning, you can literally do it blind folded after just a couple take downs.

Firing a 3 or 3 1/2" 12 gauge buckshot shell is not pleasant and will damage your shoulder if not held correctly and even then can bruise you.

1st gun I ever fired was a 410 single shot at 4 years old, 56 years ago and still own that gun. Its my preferred gun when hunting squirrel or rabbit as its light weight, carries well and low recoil is fun to shoot.

My adult daughter has Ruger 10/22 take down that I gave her for self defense. 30 round mag and zero recoil. Sure its only a 22 round but does pack more of a punch from a long barrel and can be fired very fast accurately due to lack of recoil. She is small so I can't imagine what it would look like if she tried shooting a 3" magnum 12 gauge buckshot round.
