The US version looked a bit different, but not by much; Note the difference in taillight design in the last picture...

And then the Previa replaced the original Van; It was called the Estima in Japan, and was only sold in North America for the first generation, specifically from the 1991 to 1997 model years (1999 was the last year for the 1st Gen overall).

My first car, and both my sisters was an ‘84 Toyota van. It was the family mini van of my moms, that they kept and was the kids vehicle from 98-2004. Three kids learned how to drive in that thing and it never broke down.

had a rear AC console that was way ahead of its time, the bench seats folded around so they could face each other in back, both face backwards, or lay flat for camping (terrible idea for a bunch of high school kids to have a mobile bed).

the motor was under the drivers seat, you had to unlatch the seat and it hinged back in order to change the oil. Total death trap if you ever hit someone head on, guaranteed to lose both legs at the knees.

0-60 time had to be around a minute and a half, if you ever wanted to pass someone on the highway you had to turn the AC off and hit the Overdrive button off on the shifter.

Absolutely loved that car, and we were all devastated when my little sister sold it for 200.00 in 2006. Still saw it around town for a few years after that. It’s the reason I became a Toyota believer.

Also, I should add the ‘84 was rear wheel drive, and that thing was light enough that me and 2 friends could pick up the back end and move it. Wisconsin winters in that thing were hilarious, it was a doughnut machine. Somehow never rolled it though.

So you're saying that the A/C worked great, but it really hampered performance...? Also, why in the hell did your sister sell it for $200?!?!

Positraction/limited-slip, or one-wheel peel? Also, what did that van look like with regards to rust?!?!

Yeah, the AC still blew COLD when she sold it. The transmission was starting to slip, had 250k+ it was beat to hell after 20+ years of dumb kids driving it. We honestly felt bad for the guy that bought it. Should have known it was a Toyota and was going to keep kicking for another few years

You couldn’t see through the floor yet, but I bet you could by the time the guy junked it. We just considered it weight reduction the farthest the rust ate up the side panels.

Probably wouldn't have passed inspection here in PA!

Haha, Wisconsin’s a little bit of the Wild West for registration, if you’ll send them 20.00 dollars, you can register it. No inspections, no nothing.

Even if you don't live there? Also, doesn't Milwaukee and the suburbs have annual emissions testing?

Milwaukee and Madison might, we were in a smaller town in the middle of the state. At the time, there were no rules. I’ve been living elsewhere in the Midwest for 10+ years now, so things may have changed.
