What's good is this is all off grid. Wind, solar, battery storage all used to produce the hydrogen.

Looks like they're gonna sell buckets of Rav4 Primes :p Also note that the Subie version will still get the tax incentives.

BEVs are a bad idea compared to a PHEV for most peeps.

The main problem with nuclear is nobody wants it in their back yard and nobody wants the waste being driven near them. It’s a great power source that’s very safe (these days), but the fear remains.

We make a ton of wind power in the Midwest, but transmission lines are incredibly expensive and, like nuclear, nobody wants the lines near their property. A lot of it goes unused (according to every EE prof I’ve ever had that has 0% skin the game).

Data Reveals Tremendous Growth In Volumetric Energy Density Of EV Batteries

    It will only get better...

    https://insideevs.com/news/581729/volumetric-energy-density-ev-batteries-growth/

The higher the volumetric energy density is, the smaller the battery pack can be (assuming the same energy content).

It's not the only metric, as there is also the gravimetric energy density, which tells how much energy can be stored per weight unit. The higher it is, the lighter the battery pack can be.

In the new weekly presentation, the Department of Energy’s (DOE) Vehicle Technologies Office highlights how the volumetric energy density of lithium-ion batteries (industry average for battery packs) changed between 2008 and 2020.

The progress is tremendous, as in 2008 the number was only 55 Wh/Liter, while in 2020 it was 450 Wh/l, according to the study. That's an 8-fold increase in 12 years.

    Progress (on the pack level):

    • 2008: 55 Wh/l
    • 2010: 90 Wh/l
    • 2013: 140 Wh/l
    • 2017: 250 Wh/l
    • 2020: 450 Wh/l

Recycled Lithium-Ion Batteries Can Perform Better Than New Ones

Lithium-ion batteries are at the heart of nearly every electric vehicle, laptop and smartphone, and they are essential to storing renewable energy in the face of the climate emergency. But all of the world’s current mining operations cannot extract enough lithium and other key minerals to meet skyrocketing demand for these batteries. Establishing new mines is an expensive, years-long effort. And mining also creates a host of environmental headaches—such as depleting local water resources and polluting the nearby region with runoff debris—that have led to protests against new mines.

Dunno about that, the onboard BMS should adjust to prevent degradation. With new battery chemistries and Solid State solution coming that will eventually become a non issue but this is a good test to see what will be possible.

Maybe I'm thinking it's an American thing.... there's a certain every-man-for-himself thing here.....I can see Vehicle-to-Home being popular where your F150 Lighting can be your house's backup power source. Don't so much see the Vehicle-to-Grid picking up if the grid isn't somehow picking up some cost.

I own a leaf, I wouldnt reccomend them to anyone. Even the new units since Nissan still isnt using active thermal mangement on their batteries. In temperate areas they are fine but in hot places like FL and AZ the batteries arent surving long. We only have 17k miles on out 2016 30 KWH leaf and nissan just warrantied our battery 4 months ago. They popped in a new 40 KWH battery under warranty, bill came out to $13k, so avoid the leaf

Yeh Ford is definitely the leader in home backup systems from vehicle and can be done soon since they are selling the equipment now to do so. This V2G will require very smart electrical grid modifications that the US isn't close to yet. I'm thinking though that the FOrd system would power certain things in the house not an entire home like a petrol generator. Dunno the specifics.

It'll be interesting to see what needs to change with the grid to accommodate V2G. I bet other battery backups like Megapacks will be a more popular back-to-the-grid alternative.

As for the Ford system, it'll power your whole house. You need to have $5k of electrical hardware installed for the truck to send the power back to your house, but it'll switch right over as soon as power from the grid is lost and stop as soon as it's back. Pretty slick.

Very cool times ahead. Hopefully I'm around long enough to take advantage of some of them.

V2H means you can get a subsidized battery pack that also happens to drive around too. :p

    lol

    The future.

Just throw more tax payer money at the problem and issue EOs outlawing ICE cars.

It’s like the entire market is trending down or something.
