I've recently sold my 2013 Tacoma and I have the 12V Solutions remote start out of it. Worked great while I had it.

How do these work exactly? Do you have to leave your key in the truck or will it just not go anywhere until you insert your key? How easy is the installation?

Truck won’t move until you put the key in and turn it and press the brake.
Install is easy plug and play. unplug factory harnesses and plug theirs in and than plug the factory harness into their harness. very simple just follow the instructions

What TRD2010SpeedwayBlue said is very accurate. I've installed 3 of these harnesses (mine, my wife's, and a friend's). The install videos do a good job of helping you through the process even though everything is pretty self explanatory.

Whomever buys it I'll make sure they have good links to the install videos.

When the truck is started remotely it locks the doors and you have to insert the key, turn the ignition to the "on" position and then tap the break. Otherwise the truck just dies. It will also shut off your truck after about 20 minutes if you don't insert the key.

There is also a feature that allows you to leave the truck running without the key while you run into a store. When the truck is running, you tap the FOB and remove the key.

Does this work with the factory FOB, or come with its own?

It comes with its own (2) FOBs. 1 is considered a "Long Range" fob and the other is a standard range FOB.

The factory fob still works fine though.

On the 2nd gen the setup they are not able to combine it. The 3rd gen I believe they can do it.

Best money I've spent. I remote start my truck 5 min before clocking out at work, truck is not an oven by the time it's time to get in and drive. I leave the AC on vent mode and max speed, when I get in, I put it on Recirculate and drive off with it being at a decent temperature. This is in South Texas where it gets 100+ every day.
