Rebuild, crank and won’t turn over

    What’s up TacoWorld,
    I have a 2006 Tacoma 2.7 4WD
I just got it rebuild so everything is pretty much new (head gasket, water pump, thermostat, valve cover gasket, spark plugs) the whole engine rebuild kit from Rock auto. I got it to start on the first try. After that I drove it around town for about 45 minutes and it turned on and off fine.

I decided to take it on the freeway and 30 minutes later I notice the check engine light, battery light, and the temperature gauge almost all the way up. So I exited off the ramp, as I was going up the ramp the truck shut off and It rolled down to where I parked it.

I opened my hood to check, and noticed the radiator and reservoir boiling and my back fire wall all wet with coolant. I checked back there and was able to locate the back bypass hose coming off the pipe. I put the hose back onto the pipe and tighten it. I waited a little bit for the truck to cool down and drove it off.

I drove it for another 10 minutes while the check engine light was on, battery light off, and temperature gauge in the middle. Shortly after that the truck shut off. I parked the car and let it cool off for about 25 minutes. I tried staring it but it won’t start. Now It cranks but wont turn. With no tools or anything, I towed it home.

    What I done so far:
-engine check light was p0115 and replaced sensor with new (no other codes)
-Replaced battery so I have a new battery
    - fuel pump test and fuel line is shooting gas
-starter worked before but also tested and is good
-alternator worked before but also tested and is good
-check all fuses and relays and is good
-replaced reservoir cap and radiator cap(new)

when I crank it now, I can see the coolant boiling and coming out of the reservoir.

As of now I’m kinda lost on what it can be, if anyone can help me figure out what’s going on with my Tacoma.

If coolant is bubbling from the reservoir by just cranking the truck, it sounds like the head gasket bad.
You’re pumping air into the coolant system.

Have you pulled the plugs and inspected the cylinders for coolant?
    Compression check?

Yeah, I pulled out all the spark plug wires and there all dry. Can a new head gasket just go bad that fast? I will be performing a compression check soon.

seems like the engine overheated and blew the head gasket. even though you had a new gasket installed, overheating the engine will make it bad. if and when you replace the gasket again, check the engine block and cylinder head for possible warpage/damage from overheating.

Ok cool, I will have the head gasket change when I take it back. I just did a spark test with my buddy and I have no spark. He’s assuming that the timing belt is off. I have a picture of the crank shaft pulley mark and it’s not lined up with the top mark on the motor. Can this also be a reason why it’s not starting?
    -thanks for the help

so your engine does not have a timing belt. it has a timing chain and if the chain was off timing, your engine would've been running like shit. if you have no spark, i would check the fuse first. the coil packs do not use a distributor or a belt to work so the timing concern i wouldnt worry about.

You need to find out why you have air entering the cooling system. No need to diagnose anything else. You should not have air bubbling out the reservoir when cranking.

My guess is that the head gasket has failed and you are firing air in to the coolant jacket of the block.

I hope not, but don’t see any other reason that would happen.

Ok cool, I poured water into the radiator this morning all the way until it was filled up and checked an hour later and all the water we’re gone. I checked the spark plugs and everything was dry. I checked my oil and it’s clean (thank god). No water anywhere.

which fuse would be the one to check for spark?

how do will I get all the air out of the cooling system when the vehicle is not turning on for me to bleed it out? Maybe bad radiator?

    Stop.

First you need to do as @TnShooter has suggested. Find out why there is air being pumped into the coolant system when you turn over the engine with the starter. That should never happen.

It went somewhere. Time to find where before making things even worse. Are their other hoses off? Has the heater core blown and dropping coolant in the cab?

A stuck or improperly installed t stat can cause an overheat.

An improperly installed head/head gasket can cause an overheat.

If someone else did all this work you hopefully have some type of warranty. Have them tow it in and fix it.
