Oil change disaster advice needed

If I was in your shoes, I’d probably just trade it in - as long as I don’t loose any money from the deal. I just don’t think I can live with the thought of my engine knocking and them telling me they didn’t find anything.

 

I’m thinking now…..is this what generally happens when you find a sub 10k vehicle on a dealers lot? A honked-up service job I suppose. So many land mines to navigate during a vehicles purchase.

 

It’ll be interesting to see what the report says. My mechanic buddy will be going over it to interpret what was done. The only way I see keeping the truck is if my friend oks it. In that circumstance does everyone think it would be reasonable to ask for an extended warranty if I don’t trade it?

 

That is why I do not buy a used car anymore. Learned my lesson with a previous purchase. Transmission issues.

 

Not necessarily. The truck I traded in had right at 10,000 3 years old. Someone got a good one in that case.

 

For “fun”, I’m speculating that the oil filter cap o-ring was installed in the wrong spot and not in it’s proper groove. Anyone that’s read the warning on the box flap on a Toyota filter cartridge should know what I mean.

If it were mine, I’d have them take an oil sample and cut open the pleats of the filter element to inspect for metallic particles after 100 miles or so, and again at the next oil change interval. On their dime. Any abnormal findings on the sample or glitter in the filter = bad news. If all good, put some more miles on it. Like 300K.

Oil pressure does not lube an engine, it only gets the oil to where it needs to be to lubricate. And that lubricating oil film does not disappear in a couple seconds. Timing chain tensioners, VVTI cam phasers, and hydraulic lifters get noisy without oil pressure, and are probably what you heard when the oil pressure dropped.

 

Perfectly reasonable and expected request. An extended warranty cost them very little. Let’s also do an oil and filter change at 100, 500 and 1,000 miles.

 

Any damage isn't acceptable. You didn't do this, they did. They need to make (you) whole. Remember that.

This has been an interesting thread to watch. I have never let the dealership touch my vehicles, except for Warranty issues. I think the OP has been patient with the dealership and they need to make this right. I probably would trade in as well if I got a fair price on both the trade and the new vehicle.

 

Being a former Toyota technician. If they didn’t pull the oil pan and and rod caps, and main bearing caps and inspect, if they didn’t pull valve covers and inspect cam journals at minimum thats not an acceptable inspection imo.

would be nice to know where it was leaking from. if that is not stated in this "report" then they are covering something up, IMO

 

So.....they will be showing you the borescope video, the results of the differential compression test, and the oil analysis of the oil that was left in the engine (if none in the pan, then of the oil in the filter housing)????
Obviously, if you go with plan B, the value of your trade will be AT LEAST equal to the price you originally paid.

 

All that remains to be seen. Unless I’m completely convinced a thorough inspection has been performed AND an extended warranty is put in place sufficient in length to give me peace of mind, on to plan B.

 

Ditto....I've said that before...they should make ZERO money on any deals.

 

This is a great point, report should include where its leaking from. Don't think I've heard this mentioned before in this thread, and should be top of the list, one of the first things the dealer reveals.

 

In my follow up email I specifically asked for the cause of the leak to be stated. We’ll see if it’s included. Hopefully I’ll get it sometime tomorrow.
