Those of you who think “oh this is mainly for the AT guys…” here is a recent review of one of our customers on his manual OTT tune.

Can confirm. 2014 NA 4.0L TRD-OR 6-Spd Manual driver here, moved from stock/no tune to OTT7 (for 2nd gens) a couple of weeks ago. First time I have run a non-OEM tune on this (or any) vehicle. I installed (flashed) the tune myself using my own HPTuners hardware & software. The actual tune file was supplied by @JustDSM.

The extra torque is noticeable across the power band, even on 87 octane. I will post a full review after another couple tanks of gas, but I definitely recommend the tune.

I'm in the Greater Toronto Area and have connected with YotaTune. YotaTune recommended OTT 7.0 for Canadian winters and seasonal changes in fuel; I almost exclusively use Shell 91, anyway. The next local tuning window is June 11.

Just got my OTT tune today on my 2022 TRD Pro from Alex at AY Tuning LLC. Two thoughts immediately jump out at me.
    1. This tune is incredible!
    2. Maybe even more important, Alex is one of the best guys you will ever meet!
I went with Mild/Medium for my set up and feel like the throttle feels close to stock. I didn’t even bother trying the Light/Mild setting cause I was so happy with the other one felt, and I probably wouldn’t be able to tell the difference between the two anyway. For those of you worried about those details, pick the one best for your driving….your foot will adjust just fine.
Shift points are way better and buttery smooth compared to stock. Luckily I hit a yellow light on my test drive, so I had a chance to romp on it to get through the intersection and it did not disappoint. I would have def stopped for that light prior to this tune. On the freeway, same story. Engine seems to run smoother and hum better and the shifting is smooth and predictable. I also love the fact that this tune is octane learning; super cool.
Even if I get no MPG increase (which I expect that I will), this was totally worth every penny.

Alex was terrific. He ended up spending an extra day here in NM and I was definitely the beneficiary of that. I was unable to get to the event that he had scheduled for this weekend, so it was able to meet up with him today since he extended his stay. Alex is totally committed to customer service, making me happy, giving me all my options, and answering all of my OCD questions. He went on my test drive with me and gave me a ton of info regarding options for other things that I might add to my truck and how OTT can assist.
There seems to be a common thread of great customer service for the guys that John and Justin recruit into their network to do these tunes and Alex is totally at the top of that heap. He made a sacrifice this weekend to be away from his family and then spent even more time away from them to accommodate me. Thanks Alex for providing customer service that I haven’t seen in years!

I would really like to know if getting a tune will help increase my gas mileage? I lost 2 mpg when I went up 1 tire size to 265/75-16. I'm getting 17mpg in mixed city driving and 19 highway. Many will thinks that is great. I realize most guys are tuning to offset big tires and a lot of weight added to the truck. I don't have any extra weight but I do have a 2" lift. My truck shifts fine so I'm not upset about that. It is a lot of money to spend on a tune to just try it. I don't know anybody personally that has had it done to test drive their truck and to ask them about real world MPG gains or losses. I know there are no guarantees about MPG gains as it depends on how you drive your truck. However I'm sure many guys are driving it the same after the tune as they were before it. Maybe I can get their feedback. Is there a difference between tunes like OTT and Kdmax in getting better gas mileage? I realize there is no scientific data to support any claim but looking for honest feedback. Love to hear your real world feedback. I also realize that there are other benefits to a tune that may justify the price however I am focused on MPG in this discussion. My fear is that I get a tune and lose MPG because of it. Thanks for your honest feedback.

I’ll let you know what I get and try to tell you how I drive when I get some data.
Mine experience has been ~22MPG highway, 17.5MPG city with stock tires - went to 285’s, mileage went to about 18.5MPG highway, 16MPG city. We’ll see what the tune does to those numbers. If each of those only went up by 1-1.5MPG, I would happy with that.

Thanks for the reply. Do you have the tune installed now? If not when are you getting it done? If so what are your impressions over stock? I look forward to hearing your MPG data.

I am running the OTT7 tune, now about 4 or 5 tanks in (i.e. since changing from stock/OEM), but can't make accurate MPG comparisons with stock because my driving varies so much in distance, location, and cargoes carried. Subjectively and by Fuelly app MPG seems about the same, but truth be told I am enjoying the tune so much that at least for awhile I have changed my driving style to be more aggressive & less efficient. So nice to just listen to the engine sing in the 3 to 4K rpm range...
    :burnrubber:

MPG comparison generally can be difficult because, as you point out, there are so many factors that influence it. Esp. if there is much variation in wind conditions between test runs, even if the runs are only minutes or hours apart. To my knowledge there is no convenient way to get really granular fine-grained results. The most one could hope for is to use the auto-stop on the gas station pump fill up to know to within maybe 0.05 gallons how much fuel has been added since last fill-up. I suppose one could set up a 10-mile course & do repetitions, stopping to use the gas-station pump to re-fill between every repetition in order to get accurate gasoline-consumed figures but that seems like a PITA and lacking flexibility.

If anyone knows a way to get fine-grained fuel consumption from the ECU (i.e. in the range of cubic cm or cu. inches of fuel consumed per mile) please point me to the TW thread where this is discussed in detail, or let's start a new thread on it. (Separately please, not wanting to hijack this OTT thread.)

I find the trip meter, on single runs, to be pretty accurate. A 50-100 mile loop run on ~flat terrain, nominal wind, and ambient temperature can give a good snapshot of attainable MPG under different start/stop/speed scenarios. Of course conditions are almost never perfect. I can get my LB Tacoma to 26+ MPG at 45-60 MPH on such a loop run in the summer. Stock except a shell.

I saw that you were coming to Vegas so that is why I'm trying to get info on how the tune effects MPG to help me decide to get tuned with you. You already sent me the registration form. I just need to make a decision. I do a lot of highway miles up Interstate 15 to mountains above Cedar City, Utah and want to keep good highway gas mileage. I think the OTT tune will help me climb the mountain roads that hit 10,000 feet. I do also tow a quad trailer from time to time with 2 quads on it. What have you seen in your tuning experience regarding MPG?

I know that Q knows a helluva lot more than I do about tunes, and especially the OTT tune, but seems to me that if you went with a Lite/Mild setup or a customized Lite/Lite setup, you would likely use less gas since you wouldn’t be romping on the throttle which many of us tend to do when there’s more pep in whatever we are driving.
I know you will be happy with the smooth shifts and the modified shift points which ever setup you decide to go with.

Your write up on post 186 was good. You are motivating me to get a tune. What does it mean to get mild/medium or a lite/mild setup?

Any of the OTT tuner guys - Please correct my misstatements.
Those two settings indicate the throttle response in normal/ECT mode.

4 throttles are offered for OTT:
    Lite - close to stock
Mild - increased, linear and smooth
Medium - further increased, still linear and smooth
Spicy - just keep turning up the dial, but still has smooth initial punch

Throttles move in pairs for ECT:
    Lite has Mild ETC
    Mild has Medium ECT
    Medium has Spicy ECT

Alex and I discussed what I might like and we just started with the mild/medium tune. So I have a mild throttle feel for normal driving that I do most of the day, and when I switch to ECT, I have a medium throttle feel. I will likely only switch to ECT when out on the highway or in 4WD mode. I didn’t even try anything else since I felt like this was what I initially wanted and didn’t figure I could tell the difference if I went down to a lite/mild setting. I wanted a little more pep off the line than what the normal stock throttle response was so hence I chose mild/medium. I figured that my foot will adjust to whatever I have within a week or so and any worries that I have will become a non-issue. If I decide I want something different, I’ll hit up Alex to change it out the next time he comes through town. The developers of this tune and their network of tuner suppliers will bend over backwards to make sure you are happy and get what you want. There are some good comments earlier on this thread that discuss the settings when using ECT in 4WD mode as well that are super helpful; also some comments from John & Justin about even doing something custom for you other than these options that I listed. I believe that through all of their development they settled on these settings since they give some variability and variety while getting most people what they want.

Almost forgot to mention that if I wanted to, Alex would have loaded up every single one of these options and let me test drive every single one before I made a decision.
These guys are the best because they have passion for this product and service, and genuinely love seeing the response that you have as a customer when you see how this can transform these trucks. They drive Tacomas just like us - they get it.
