I wouldn't consider this an inspection in any way shape or form. Sounds like they used the same "kid" who initially did the oil job to do an inspection. I wouldn't accept these results - as was said above, knocking is damage.

I’m a very trusting guy but also not naive either. How convenient of a root cause might that be if it really didn’t happen that way. It’s acknowledging a problem that doesn’t actually identify malpractice. If they told me this on DAY 1, and showed me, that would be a different story. I get very suspicious when there was little to no communication for over a week.

If that were the failure I would expect them to tell me the o-ring thing on day 1 and indicate a damage assessment may take a week or so. This all sounds like they wanted to figure out the best story to tell.

    NOT BUYING IT.

It would still bother me that the truck ran with little to no oil (hence, the knocking and warning lights encountered when it all happened). I would like to see how much they’ll offer if you ask about trading the truck off (if that is even one of your option at this point).

My thoughts are that inspection is grossly inadequate. I'm a patient guy, but that would not cut it with me. I'd want it borescoped at a minimum.

And then after they do that I'd take it to an independent on my dime, and then if my independent shows damage I'd have a sit down with the GM with both reports in my hand.

EDIT: Right up until this point I was fully on board with team "There might be no damage, give the dealer a chance to make it right." Now I'm squarely with team "dealer is screwing you with a Cheshire smile."

And time for Plan B, whatever that was for you. Plan A failed, and they've made clear that they're through with their diagnostics. Its in your hands at this point, so I'd get some sort of written agreement that they'll do a proper diagnostics, or pay for a third party. They kept it a week to do another oil change, and now you won't even have the oil to be sent off for proper sampling.

Edit: and they could be correct; there's a potential for no damage, but you're owed a proper inspection to truly give them and you that closure; an oil flush is not that.

I'm thinking the same thing. Very easy to check on day 1 or 2, if there was an issue with the oil housing seal. Root cause should be reported within a day or 2, especially if it's an obvious thing like that. Then a thorough assessment of the engine for damage. Giving that as the cause after a week seems very suspicious.

At this point if you are not satisfied with what they are offering I would consult an attorney who specializes in this sort of thing. If you trade it in you will no doubt loose money on the deal plus have to deal with waiting for a new truck

That is complete bullshit that they didn’t even open it up. I would have a meeting with the service manager or higher and tell him this nearly proves negligence and if he doesn’t make the right second move you’ll be dealing with my attorney, simply because I’d take great pleasure paying for seeing you get ducked.

This same thing happened at a Nissan dealer I worked at 20+ years ago- to an infinity sedan. The guy got a new motor. Drain plug was just finger tight and probably fell out going down the road. Didn’t take long for the damage to occur.

    Lame, pencil-whipped inspection.

Demand a borescope and differential compression test on all six cylinders. (And I'd be standing there watching them do it.) Probably too late to get an oil analysis on whatever oil remained in the engine. Probably worth it to drop the oil pan and get a look at the lower-end as well.

They are calling it good because there were no metal shavings in the oil? That is pretty optimistic.

If the borescope doesn't show any scoring on the cylinder walls, and the compression test is good, they still owe you a FACTORY extended warranty.

    Not impressed.

Was really hoping for a better showing from your dealership after how patient you've been with them and the amount of past business.

Time to get hard. They just want you and your truck gone. When it comes back with that knock, they'll plead total ignorance.

    Did I read something wrong???

You have a 2021 truck, went in for a first oil change at 7Kish AT A DEALERSHIP... and the oil filter seal failed causing complete oil drain and KNOCKING... and the dealership isn't going to warranty the engine?

What good is a warranty if the dealer refuses to MAKE MONEY by replacing an engine UNDER WARRANTY???

At least demand a 100k warranty on the engine (regardless of time since you don’t put many miles on it). If they don’t cover that I’d trade it in at a different dealer. Like others have said you should demand proper diagnostics and proof of it. Have your mechanic go over it

That transaction would cost him thousands due to the current dealerships negligence. Make the dip shits who caused the damage pay.

It wasn't a warranty issue. It was a negligence issue. So dealer would have to eat the cost of said repairs. But yes, you read the rest correctly; engine ran with no oil, to the point of knocking, and they say its fine because they refilled the oil afterwards (a week later).
