I had 2 near misses with deer on 2 separate occasions yesterday and I've been thinking about your story ever since.

Trip 1: 11am, overcast. That damn deer was the same color as the greyed out asphalt. Super quiet Sunday morning so I was zoned out a little. Saw its ear twitch which is what got my attention. Was doing 25, and prob could have reached out and touched it as I went past.

Trip 2: 8:15ish pm and getting dark. Coming down a 45mph downhill road in a curve. Fairly commercial area so wasn't looking out for them as much as the residential area a little down the street. Looked through the last part of the turn and there's 4 mule deer on the sidewalk eating the parking strip. Curb plus about 5 feet of road. As I passed them they spooked and I swear I was done for.

Def keeping an eye out a little closer after that.

I'm glad to have moved out of the more rural area I used to live in, and into a city now for this reason. Once, I made a late night run for some snacks, and as another car in the oncoming lane is approaching, a deer jumped out between the two of us right before we passed each other, with maybe 2 feet to spare on each side between the deer and the cars. Wild.

I'll never forget, last year doing a road trip to/from Colorado, on the way back we drove from Estes Park to Zion in one go. During the last little stretch before entering Zion, I turned on my aux lights since no one else was on the road, and came to realize that there were multiple herds of deer just hanging out on the side of the road, watching us go by. That was the most anxiety I ever had driving, I was just waiting for one of the hundreds of deer to jump out into the road.

Oh yeah, that's a super rowdy stretch for wildlife. Both coming into the park from LaVerkin, and on the other side in Orderville canyon.

Once looked down to check the map, looked up in time to see large hooves disappearing into the darkness. Buddy behind me then told me on the radio a cow elk had basically hurdled my tacoma's hood as I was doing 50-60.

Lol I scared myself shitless at one point on that same drive. Pulled over real quick to pee, and as I'm peeing I look up and realize there's a cow I hadn't noticed in the dark, standing about 6 feet away from me on the other side of a fence..

Aux lights was one of the best investments for me. Been doing long distance rallies for a few years and sometimes your route works out to put you in BFE WV or KY at odd times of night or morning so being able to see is huge. Mine are on a dimmer so I run them all the time.

I run Clearwater lights which are a bit steep but come with a dimmer. Skene makes a nice controller that works well and is adjustable.

Anyone using a messenger bag on their bike? Currently rocking a kriega trail 18 in their like, bright safety yellow colorway and it's not the most professional thing. Before that I was using a snowboarding backpack that was just a hair too small (i think it's 12 liters?). And again, not the most professional. I work on a college campus so if someone sees you walk in with a backpack, they assume student.

I was looking at possibly snagging a timbuk2 or some other messenger bag, but wasn't sure how it'd be on a motorcycle, if it would swing around or anything like that. I saw Kriegas messenger bag, but I'm not really looking to get another roll top bag. Nice part is I don't normally go above 50mph on my commute, so highway wind speeds aren't really an issue. Size-wise, 95% of the time it's just laptop and a lunch, no need for anything over probably 25 liters tops.

    Experiences?

Edit: I've been looking at moto and/or bicycle specific ones, mainly for the better harnesses, cross belts, and bits o' reflectivity. Open to whatever though.

Kreiga actually just put out a new design of their messenger bag that gets rid of the roll top design. Same basic bag but in a slightly more professional format. Their gripper back is what makes it really. Keeps it from shifting on your body as you ride. That and the secondary chest strap effectively making it a 2-point sling.

I’ve ridden to work with my leather messenger bag but that doesn’t really help your search since I made it. I rotated it so the bag basically sat on my lap while riding and it stayed put on the 30 min ride to work. Probably looked dorky but the height of my step-up seat didn’t allow the bag to hang behind me properly.

I have a canvas one that works great.

I just wax it and it hauls all my stuff on and off campus easy. I just set the strap to the length to keep it up in my back when I ride. It stays put and is water resistant when waxed. Also it was like 45 bucks and has held up 3 years now with no signs of wear.

Not using one personally but check out Aerostitch. I know several folks using their stuff including the messenger bags. Pricey buy in but the stuff lasts and is really well made.

Been using my Goruck SK26 as my truck, bike, walk, and now moto commuting needs daily and around the world for 10+ years now. Toss a PT belt around it for visibility and boom, job done.

Not cheap, but other than some patina, still looks as it did when it arrived.

26 liters, 1000D, has a laptop compartment and a divider sleeve inside for a tablet and a few organizer pockets inside and out. All you need, nothing you don't.

    Chrome Messenger. Done.

Been using them on bicycles as a Chicago commuter and on motorcycles for 20 years. They have a 'torso' strap that locks - i do mean locks - it in place even at high highway speeds. If you stood the bike up on its front wheel, it's still not coming over the top. They use an old school car seat belt buckle which is awesome on off when you're wearing your bucket. Easily the best bicycle courier bag you can buy (subjective, but...) and works just as well on the moto. Used mine for a rare moto to work day yesterday. Two surface pro's, lunch, and travel mug. Most of them have at least reflective bits, and you can get them over the top. The 'swedish camo' looks all dark but goes 50% reflective when the lights hit it. Google 'Citizen Night Messenger' if visibility is a thing.

    upload_2022-5-3_12-28-16.jpg

not usually one to show my face but it's relevant...you can see where the torso strap clip up by my shoulder. stable. My kids and friends make fun of me. Thing goes everywhere with me. And now my son is always carrying one. Every one of my nieces and nephews got one when they went to school or left home. It's sitting on the floor next to my desk now.

I missed that one, somehow, whoops. Looks promising, but I can't find any pictures of the inside. I'll have to watch some videos on it later.

Might have to go with a standard one and skip the moto specific stuff. I have some iron/stick on reflectivity stuff I can always add if I feel like it.

I didn't know they made bags! These look really solid. A little plain, pockets and features-wise, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. And they're less expensive than Kriega's two offerings, actually.

Trying to not go backpack again, but thanks for the input
