Speaking of wacky NE weather. I took advantage of it this past Sunday and slapped together a little fire pit with a buddies used bricks. No mortar, just stacked them. It did the trick!

 

I don't want to make everyone insanely jealous, but I finally got some patches made

Paging all home audio people

I’m hoping to close on a house at the end of the month (what a miserable process) and want to do a home audio setup as I go. I plan to get a receiver/amp first and want one “I can grow into”. The question is; I want a five speaker setup for my living room but I also want the same receiver to run a separate pair of outdoor speakers separate from the living room speakers. Is this possible? Can they both run at the same time or would that system limit me to only have one or the other? I don’t anticipate running both but just curious.

Yes, you can get a 7.2 system and if the second set your outdoor are running, it drops to 5.1 system. Last time I researched was years ago, so I am sure things are better even. But it is very possible, I have a set of speakers in my kitchen and outside run off a switch from my 2nd channel.

Exactly! Even some basic 5.1 systems can do stereo to the main system and the aux channels simultaneously while running different inputs. Great for parties.

Is there anything specific I should be looking for then when I choose a receiver? Does it need to specify they can run multiple inputs at once or how does it know when input I want to which speakers? I want a fairly simple system overall. Two outdoor speakers and at most 5 speakers for the living room. I think the setup using a 7.2 system would work fine, just want to make sure I don’t buy the wrong receiver. Thanks again fellas.

 

it should say something about zone 2 i believe. Do you have a brand you prefer?

I'm a big fan of Yamaha's receivers. I've had Onkyo, Pioneer, Sherwood, and a bunch of other makes over the years and I keep coming back to Yamaha. I have a 5.1 channel Yamaha driving Polk speakers in my living room and I can't imagine anything touching it for the price I paid. If I get a new TV, I'll upgrade since mine is older and won't do 4k passthrough.

I also have a Yamaha RX-777 in my garage - got it second hand, it's about 20 years old. It drives a pair of RCF PA speakers in the garage and a pair of Yamaha NS-AW294 outdoor speakers under my canopy. It does an awesome job.

Seconding yamaha, I don't install many avr's these days but I always liked yamaha. Easy to use and crazy what you get for the price

 

I think I paid $250 for the one in my living room - brand new. It was when I bought the house so I was being cheap, but I have absolutely no complaints about it. It has no business being as good as it is for that price.

@Clark27 have you thought about speakers yet? My living room is all Polk stuff I bought when I was in high school - it's nothing mind blowing, but a solid bang for your buck product. Something like Klipsch's Reference lineup would probably be one step above that and the pricing on those looks very good right now. If I did it again, I'd seriously look at Paradigm - I have a couple little old Paradigm Atoms in my office that I'm super impressed with. Their Founder series are beautiful looking speakers, but a little too pricey for me.

I've always liked this stuff, but I haven't kept up as much as someone like @mach1man001 . I'm sure he'll provide lots of valuable input.

 

I had a Onkyo receiver. After it crapped out, I replaced it with a Yamaha and have no complaints. The only thing the Onkyo could do over the Yamaha was analog over HDMI, which I haven't needed in years.
