i personally wear older shimano mtb shoes on my commutes. i have a pair of Looks when I was really getting into road biking, while they are great for riding, they aren't comfortable to walk around in. i also have some lower end pearl izumi shoes that i got for spin classes, but sheesh those suck to wear too.

Need some advice guys. I bought a wheelset off PB that just arrived today. As soon as I saw the box I was skeptical. The box was barely taped shut and looks to me to be a box meant for a single wheel. Not a MTB wheelset.

Any way, the sellers account seems to have good history and the item was listed as “In excellent close to brand new condition.
Perfectly true with not a single scratch.”

    Listing:
    https://www.pinkbike.com/buysell/3319754/

I don’t think I am too much of a stickler for cosmetic things so I can overlook the few nicks in the rims and some rubbing of paint on the spokes from shipping. What I’m super pissed about is that at least two spokes, one on each wheel, are clearly bent. I’m no wheel builder but I certainly didn’t agree to buying wheels with bent spokes that were advertised as being excellent and close to new condition.

I paid for the item via PayPal goods/services. What are my options beyond just suck it up?

Spoiler, I ain’t going that route.

Request a refund and for the seller to cover return shipping? Ship on my dime but get a refund for the purchase? Or go straight to filing a PP claim?

I really hate to be that guy but in this case it’s clear to me the way the seller chose to package and ship the wheelset is to blame here. Sorry for the rant.

That’s likely how I’d prefer to proceed at this point, but I don’t know exactly how to go about that. I have a ‘draft’ communication prepped to at least start the conversation.

i just don’t know what my ‘rights’ are with a sub $400 PP g/s transaction.

Contact him first and give him the chance to fix it for you. Nothing sucks more than financial action before someone has been given the chance to do the right thing. You have that option if he refuses to take responsibility, take them as a return, or refund the amount of money it would take to have the 2 spokes replaced.

I’d be about here J. Give them a short window to own up to it, they may be unaware but if they’re unwilling to see your POV or drag their feet I’d leverage PP or my CC’s protection provisions without remorse.

    Quoting myself as follow-up.

Seller seems to be willing to assist to make things right, for now. He’s offered $50 refund to cover spoke repair costs.

I have no idea what it costs to replace a spoke so I’ll be swinging by the LBS tmr to get a quote. If the repair costs exceed $50 and the seller won’t refund enough to cover the repairs I’ll have little choice other than to start a claim with PP.

Rode with the homies today and I had to take a break on them climbs. At the top I just sat down and hoped I didn’t pass out. 3rd short ride since December and about 24 miles since then as well.

Also skrrrt skrrrt green jersey and pants for camo as I’m passed out in the bushes after a good puke.

NF pants comfy enough to wear in low 80s high 70s is awesome. Keeps the poison off the legs.

Looks like Bontrager hubs with straight pull spokes so should be super easy to source at a Trek dealer. Might be more trouble to remove/replace rim tape than the actual spokes.

That's what I would do too.
One other thing to consider; I agree it's his fault for poor shipping and he should totally make it right. But, if he's putting $50 up, and even if the cost is a bit more than that, is it still worth it? I mean, if you like the wheelset, and imagined adding the extra cost of fixing it to the original selling price, would you still be happy with the deal?
All I'm saying is, he screwed up, but why go through the hassle if you're still happy with the wheels and total price paid?

^^ What he said. It will likely cost more than $50 to get the spokes replaced, retension, true the wheels and retape, especially since you bought wheels with the proprietary spokes.

Those hub flanges look pretty rough too. I would not consider that "close to new condition". Did the guy post detailed pics of the hubs that showed the damage on Pinkbike?

To me, those bent/scratched spokes look more like the bike landed on its side in a rock garden... I've done that more than once. Damage level looks cosmetic, but condition is deffo not as advertised (I'm sure TW opinions will differ here).
And that's a dogshit packing job...

Best guess is spoke, tape, true about $40.00 per wheel (depending on the shop)

Fair point and I can respect that opinion. We’ll see where the total repair costs land.
I’ll be shocked if the repair total is even remotely close to $50. I’m guessing the total will be a fair bit north of that. My LBS is a Trek store so I’m not too bothered by the Bontrager proprietary parts.
Thanks for pointing that out. I did not see anything beyond the spoke damage. I’ll make sure the shop gives both wheels a thorough look for potential issues.
I do honestly feel the wheels were very lightly used prior to the sale. Based on the absolute shit packaging, I think all damages occurred in transit. Both spokes that are bent were facing each other in the box. Dude had the hubs all intertwined in opposing spokes and minimal packaging for protection.
