There is no way in hell this dealer is going to tear this engine down to look for internal damage. If they were going to go to all that trouble, then they might as well just put in a new motor. I would push hard for a full value (what you paid for it) trade on a new truck. This engine might not give you a lick of trouble ever, but then again it very well could. I would not want that albatross hanging off of my neck every time I took this truck out for a drive.

Best of luck OP; I feel for for you brother.

Only on things related to what the owner botched, if you had an issue with the sunroof for example it would be covered.

I’ve been following this thread with sadness. Sorry for your troubles, OP. Lots of varying advice. All of it well intentioned. We all know how lonely your position is at the moment.

    My two cents:
    1. Extended warranty or trade the vehicle for piece of mind.
    2. Have the dealer pay for a full dyno test. If there is damage, it might very well show itself under a good load.
    3. Have the dealer pay for an oil analysis immediately after.

There are no rules on this one, and one approach might be no better than another. You could always hope, say a prayer, and drive away with their word for it. Despite what we all say, I’m sure this is by far what the vast majority of us would do in a similar situation.

    All the best.

In my opinion, OP will be fine if the dealership buys his truck for more than it is worth. And then he can buy a new 2022, there, or another dealer, at MSRP, for about the same money. Then he will have no more worries. Don't have to worry about tearing down engine, another inspection, calling corporate, talking to management, etc. Nightmare over.

The more I read the more I'm starting to agree.. Let them fix it however they want and then trade it back in at this same dealership for a different truck. That's the only way the dealer can prove that the vehicle didn't suffer a loss of value

I'd ask them, if they approached the Tech that did the oil change and ask him how the O-ring got cut. That you are not satisfied by the report of no damage being present. That they made a drastic mistake and this needs to be escalated up to corporate for a replacement engine on the mistake of the cut o ring.

I love TV car shows. But this just fu#&ing pisses me off.
Watched it today then went home had a couple of beers and watched it again. Same results. Watched a couple of their other videos. Still pisses me off. Destroying perfectly good engines. I know it's TV. But I don't give a rats ass. I'll bet good money there's not one person on TW that actually enjoyed watching that. Entertaining yes, good TV? He'll no!

    Sorry, for Jacking the thread.

Most if not all of the builds on these TV shows go to the crusher or become show vehicles that cannot be driven on the street. The network will not accept any liability for them.

Corporate has levers to pull when reputation and potential legal problems exist. (I had a Ram problem that magically solved itself when corporate got involved.)

That said, my two cents worth is that it’s time to give the GM one last chance to do the right thing and then lawyer up. And if your lawyer permits it (probably won’t, though), name and shame.

I have always done that. I would guess the dealership never does as it’s on a lift. I was due to change my oil just after this thread began and as always was very careful in following the proper procedures. Still after checking for leaks and putting the skid plate back on, I took my truck out for a short drive and when back home pulled the skid just to double check! I hope this ends well for the OP.

@Rannyhill do you have your truck back or is it still at the dealership? I would NOT take receipt of it until you have a plan or agreed upon settlement (ie: trade in for new or new motor or extended warranty). If you have taken ownership back, I am afraid that may your acceptance of their diagnosis from their standpoint. In that case I would take it to another dealer and trade in on new or sell on Vroom/Carvana (Vroom gave me $3,000 more than Carvana for my 2019) and purchase a replacement. Unless you are not too worried about it, well then that is a plan too I suppose.

Yeah, I've had to call corporate a couple times over the years on decisions the dealer made that i didn't agree with. Both times corporate called the dealer and they magically changed their decision in my favor.

Been lurking in 36 pages of this thread so far. @Rannyhill, sorry for all this BS. My Pops had a similar issue with a service mishap at the dealer which resulted in a "decommissioned" vehicle.

Without getting into too many specifics of my instance for legal reasons, you'll be well to ask the dealer to buy this truck back at current market value, or make an even trade for current same model on the lot. If there isn't anything wrong with the truck, they shouldn't buck you on it. You (and your lawyer) will find our real quick if they think there's a real and lasting issue with the vehicle if they're suddenly concerned with buying it back.

All this other stuff is BS. Truck's engine is suspect. No amount of scope, lab, smell test, twinge in ya neck is going to get you anything close to whole. Screw the sentimentality and get a new truck.

Totally agree with this. Keep things civil with the dealer but be firm. Let them know that you have close friends that are mechanics recommending that they replace the truck. Don't be afraid to say that this is THEIR MISTAKE and they need to make it right. As others have said, tell them that if this was your mistake they would recommend a new engine and probably void your warranty. You have the upper hand here. Never forget that. If the dealer does not satisfy your concerns, don't be afraid to elevate it to Toyota to get what you feel is right. Do NOT settle. Good luck!
