Is there any chance that an old 2006 model steering wheel could be modified to work with a 22 tacoma? I am not a fan of the way the controls are laid out. The only thing that I really need is cruise control and dash display controls, though volume would be a plus.

If its even possible I would love some advice.

    Thanks!

Most steering wheels controls are not traditional switches (Ie make or break contact), they are more like a keyboard where each key has a different resistance/voltage over the same set of wires. So that means it’s not as simple as connecting wires, you need to match resistance to what the receiving device needs. This is why those boxes that match steering wheel controls to aftermarket headunits are so expensive. So yes it’s possible, but you’ll need to be somewhat proficient in electronics, and would be a lot easier to workout if you have 2 complete vehicles from each year. Then after electronics you’ll probably have a few fitment issues to sort out, like boss and airbag.

I can give you most the data / info for what the 3rd gen headunit expects, but that’s just volume and such, not the cruse that you really need. But something like an arduino can capture what you need from each vehicle. It’s what I used to map my steering wheel controls.

edit. Thinking about this, if the 2nd and 3rd gen use the same resistance, then it would actually be a case of changing connectors around. But you’d need to verify that with a very accurate meter / scope / arduino etc.

I for one welcome our new lizard overlords. I'd like to remind them as a trusted TV personality, I can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in their underground fly caves.

Because the more svelte 06 grill needs too many shims and caulk to fit, so the steering wheel is an alternate retro touch
