I almost decided to do the conversion myself. But for now I'm enjoying my PreRunner and installed a Detroit Truetrac, have clearance, and good tires. And not having to worry about the CV angles and leaking has been nice.

You already have the GX. When you know you're gonna be in snow, take that. We have a awd Pathfinder for our snow trips. The PreRunner is our camping/trails vehicle.

Like others have said... If you plan to hire someone, it's not worth it.

if your truck isn't built up, go ahead n sell n buy...my truck is already built up with armor, gearing, suspension, sound...plus already cut up with my bumper n snorkel. i would never get what i wanted and converting my truck back to stock would cost me to much trying to get it all back. Converting mine is running about $5g cause im getting gearing and additional parts while its apart. Math doesn't add up for me to sell n buy.

Mine was bone stock aside from replacing the suspension with the 3g 4x4OR, so basically the same thing as the 2g but with higher rate front springs and a new set of 265/75R16 tires.

You could find and buy the best one

ACLB manual 4.0 TRD sport or OR from a sun state
They might tack on $5k in todays market

yeah, id sell n buy what you want
i have at least $15g in mine n thats cause i found a lot of 2nd hand armor n shit off here and marketplace. So me sourcing all the parts and having someone fab it all up and install it for me..$5g is worth it to me.
It'll sell better if its closer to stock...its a smaller crowd wanting built up trucks, plus they usually ask more cause all they did to it.

Buy a 4x4. If you decide to turn your Rwd into a 4x4, you only need the front half of the 4x4 truck. Don't let anyone tell you that you need to buy the whole truck.

Lets suppose that you purchase a decent Toyota 4X4 for $8500.00 and you sell your Toyota 2X2 for $5000.00. Your expenses upgrading to a 4X4 is $3500.00 and this is doable.

Have you seen the prices of the used tacoma 4x4 market now a days? They seem to be smoking crack prior to putting up the vehicles for sale.

cheapest I've seen a 2nd gen 4x4 is $18g stock with over 160000 miles on it and I've been checking them out...at least in marketplace on FB from FL with a 500 mile radius search range...3rd gen, might as well take out a 2nd mortgage or sell your house.

That’s the price range in CA for 2WD 2nd gens or 1st gen 4x4 with over 200k

Cool thing about converting your truck is when somebody sees a transfer case shifter sticking out of your center console people wonder what planet your Taco came from. I've had several people ask me if it was a special factory European option ;)

Drive your truck as is while saving up the money then sell and pay cash for a 4WD. I can see a disaster occuring paying someone that has little experience doing the upgrade bailing out on you when things go wrong, especially after install. Nothing beats the 4WD that was built from the factory.

false, I don’t rely on electronic actuators(if you go the non ADD route, as I did). And yeah this is one of those things that you gotta do yourself in my opinion, but as well I have the same opinion on anything related to an asset that is out of warranty already

Buy this for less cost and a whole lot less heartache. Tow it to the trails. Thrash it as you please, who cares, it isnt your daily. Tow it back home. Profit.

Alot of misinformation on here about the process and what it really entails..

Irregardless, I would say it is fairly involved and if you are adept with cross referencing and months of reading and informing yourself of what components are required for your specific swap then you should be ok.

I would recommend selling and getting 4x4. I'm too deep into my vehicle and spent a lot of parts and have done alot of non reversible mods and decided swapping would be better for my situation.

At the end of the day it’s up to you. You’ll find the ones that would say sell and buy a 4x4 and a few that will tell you do the conversion. What ever you do, do some research and pull the trigger on what ever puddle of mud seems more fun and doable. Cheers.
