No Tacoma in my near future. Towing needs exceed capability :-(

    Well folks,

I'm pretty sure the last time I posted, I was about to put down a deposit on a 2022 Tacoma OR SB. I've gotten SO much help from this community, I thought I'd stop by and say thank you and give a quick update for those interested. Our towing needs are simply going to exceed the Tacoma's ability. I had my heart set on a new OR but it will have to wait a few more years. I'm now moving into the insanely expensive arena of heavy duty pickups. My wife changes her mind on a travel trailer every couple weeks, lol. I finally said, screw it, let's bite the bullet and just get a F350 Tremor w/PowerStroke. The F350 has just about every bell and whistle one could ever want, plus 1050ft of torque and the Tremor package looks awesome but it's double the price, it's not a Toyota and frankly, the diesel powertrain sounds like a pain in the ass to maintain. I wish Toyota would enter this segment but I don't see that happening. I've had good luck with the Fords that I've owned. I sill have a 99 vic that has 300k miles and runs silky smooth. Anyway, I DO intend to buy tacoma as my daily at some point down the road and save the F350 for tow duty. Until then friends, see you on the road and I'll be back in a few years with a Tacoma in tote. Cheers folks and many thanks for those of you who chimed in and so generously shared your input on my posts!

Well, at least you didn't TRY to hook the trailer up to the Tacoma and then come back here and complain about it. This site has seen some crazy people. HD trucks, as you are aware, are not even comparable to this segment. Good luck with it. Sounds like it will do the job just fine.

Hey, thanks man! LOL, if it weren't for this forum, I may have been "that" guy. It's a good thing I listened to folks in this community and NOT the salesmen. HD trucks are indeed completely different beasts. Different tools for different jobs.

You’re gonna be waiting forever for that tremor, ordering is closed. People from last summer are still waiting. Though my friend who ordered in October just got his, and it was missing stuff. Do research on what packages you want, several options will delay your build by MONTHS. And pick a good dealer.

We have a 7.3 long bed lariat on order from December. No build date or VIN yet. Not sure if we will take it when it’s actually built. Other half got a pretty solid Dodge 3500 dually manual long bed with flat bed a couple months ago for tow duty since our 2019 ram 2500 cummins was not quite enough.

    - But did you consider buying TWO Tacomas??

Just kidding! - you have reached a reasonable conclusion.

    Best of luck!
    - I fear being stranded by fords - due to multiple past experiences - And I've never owned a single Ford!

Unreasonable to link their lack of ability to build an engine would transfer to their EVs as they do not even make those motors - but I would not buy a Ford EV either! (as unreasonable that may be!).

Not to pick on Ford - I suffer the same PTSD with GM! :argue:

Fortunately, I do not need to tow anything heavy as I would have zero vehicle options that I'd be comfortable with... (- let alone be excited about spending $$$ on!)

Yeah, we aren't in a huge rush so I'm just going to wait for the 2023 order banks to open up. I'm prepared to wait a year or more. I'm curious, did you order any of the components that have been known to cause delays? Last I checked, uplifter switches, winch, bed liner and adaptive steering were among the worst offenders. Anyway, I bet your build gets bumped to a 2023 which may be a good thing, if you're able to wait. The additional safety features, blue cruise and rumors of a ProPower generator of sorts (similar to the F150) will be worth the wait for us. Congrats on your Lariat! Hope it comes through sooner rather than later!

You can get a Duramax 6.6 in a Silverado 3500 for under 60k and it'll tow 36k. Best tow value on the market

I REALLY tried to justify a Tundra. But, I'd be spending nearly as much money for a well equipped Tundra and would only get a fraction of the towing capability. The airstream my wife currently wants is 33 feet long and weighs 10,000lbs. The Tundra isn't up to the task unfortunately. Just like most quarter tons, the payload is ridiculously inadequate for a full size truck IMO. That's not to say that my wife won't dial back her travel trailer expectations in another week or so but that is my exact problem. It's difficult to shop for a TV when you don't know what you're gonna tow.

Thanks for letting me know! I can configure a F350 XLT crew cab with the PowerStroke 4x4 for about 63. Didn't look at their fleet model, but it's probably close to the Chevy in terms of price. Man, as soon as the options start getting added, the price goes up quickly.

We changed our order from a 7.3 tremor to a 7.3 lariat long bed a few months back. We can utilize more bed with our towing so we had to give up the tremor package. Rumor is 2023 may be a redesign so if they try to bump us to a 23, we will cancel our order and take the deposit back. He seems to be happy with his dodge. It checked off a lot of boxes, mostly manual and long bed.

Be sure to update once you get your truck and do some towing with the airstream. We’d like to get one some day. For now we have a crawler hauler as our reason for a bigger truck.

Airstream...?.... 33 Feet...?.... good gawd man if you got that kind of jack to play with money is of no concern. Buy 2 of everything -
I mean there is more luxury in that thing than I experience in my house....

A real full size will be way better for towing, my buddy has the 3500, can pull over 30k pounds, put over 7000 pounds in the bed.
I kinda laugh when guys say the dbl cab 6 foot bed Tacoma is hard to drive in the city.

You'll probably get better fuel mileage, too, ironically enough...

Question is why are you comparing a tacoma to an F-350? Their not even close.

OP, congrats on the F350 if you get it. It is BY FAAAAAR the best 3500 series truck. and in my opinion the best full size truck on the market. Not to mention incredible mileage. When I had mine, I drove it from Denver to vegas and back going through the rockies via I70. Truck was loaded with gear and 4 people. Overall ave mpg was 19.6 and that included heavy traffic driving. Best of all, the truck was to tall for the garage of the cosmo, so they parked in the front area next to the Lambos an mclarens:rofl:

The simple solution to this "problem" is to have 2 trucks, a Tacoma and a Duramax :anonymous:

The only problem with that is that it's a crappy chevy. Ford is a million times better. :D:thumbsup:
