I love my new truck but miss my Tacoma
My receiver is an older Onkyo (not sure the model and I'm away from home) and it was nice for a long while. But a few features have stopped working. When I replace it I'm going to be trying either Yamaha or Denon.
As far as my speaker picks for sound vs value. I'd say Paradigm Atom, PSB Alpha or Elac Debut 2.0. Other options would would be Klipsch or JBL. Also remember you can spend to the moon on speakers (but I don't think you have to).
Also most importantly, speakers are a personal preference choice. The best thing to do is if you can listen to each of them and then decide.

I had a Onkyo TX-SR606. Apparently it was common for some resistors to crap out. Some days it worked fine, other days it gave me trouble. At the time, I think there was about a 50% success rate in replacing the bad resistors.

I think I’ll want 3-4 HDMI inputs; 4k would be ideal. I’d like to sort of future proof this purchase so I don’t need to upgrade again in the near future.

I do like Yamaha and have seen those receivers recommended many times. Seems to check all the boxes.

I did think about running two receivers; one dedicated to the living room and one to run outdoor speakers and garage speakers but the patio that will be used and the garage are complete opposite sides of the house and it’s a far run for speaker wire.

Haven’t gone much into the speakers yet. I was looking at some outdoor speakers last night on B&H but haven’t thought about indoor speakers yet. I’ll probably hold off on building the living room surround system for a while. Lots of expenses to worry about before the sound system. I’ll be smart enough to hopefully buy a nice receiver once haha.

I've had the Z5300e computer speaker system since college and it still thumps! I used to be able to rattle the dishes in the sink in my dorm suite. My favorite was playing the "blast the worst possible music" competition with my roommate. I would win, repeatedly.

Very random comment but i figured i would ask here instead of making another thread.
i am considering trying to find a tacoma to replace my xterra. The xterra gets seriously poor fuel mileage. i drive it very conservatively 75 miles/day all highway to work and the best i can get is 15.0 mpg. Realistically, what type of fuel mileage should i expect from a 3rd gen, 3.5, AT, 4x4, 4dr, 5' bed. I would plan on keeping it stock with maybe a set LT265s. I've seen comments all the way from 15mpg stock to 25mpg. A 5mpg difference would end up being almost $10k in fuel savings.

I used to routinely get into the 20s before the armor and when I had 32s, if it's all highway and you cruise at 1500 rpm you could easily hit 25 mpg I think

I've crunched numbers for people before.

Also have to consider registration and insurance. Guarantee your insurance will go way up, and taxes and registration typically are heavier for newer vehicles and then age out. Your Xterra is probably at the cheapest unless you're in RI where it goes by nada clean value

    But aside from that....

Chances are your fuel savings won't be that significant. I get a solid 21 mpg overall. Fuelly is crowd sourced data from like thousands of drivers and they're all 20-21 so that's what you could expect.

If you're going for fuel savings, a Tacoma isnt the way to go. Not a current one at least. There's a new vibrator on wheels coming out soon so they say.

Are you in RI? If so - trucks are also trucks, not passenger vehicles. You don't get your trade in reduced on taxes, and you're on a combo plate instead. But until you get into HD territory there's no added inspections, just the typical every 2 years.

If you want I can run numbers for you.

Id need to know year and condition for the X, and how many miles a year you drive.

@GarlicFarts is the math guru. My guess would be 21mpg but then the whole cost of buying a truck... he's done the math before.

Off to Texas tomorrow in the 2019 SR5. It's packed to the gills with stuff my daughter left behind when she moved in 2014. She just bought a condo in Austin and now it's all going to join her down there. Three days on the road, four days there helping her with things like hanging pictures, rewiring her disposal, put in new front door lock, etc...

Only time I've wished I had a cap instead of the tonneau cover.

Should be a nice ride, almost all highway.

    Send in the neeeeeerd!

    Okay, a few things.

    1. New York does registration by WEIGHT, and that’s it. New or old, doesn’t matter. Which is….interesting.

    2. I had to take some liberties in vehicle costs. 16.5k private party sale for your X, 40k for the tacoma. Now, assuming that, you pay sales tax. The sales tax is going to be the biggest up front cost to overcome with better MPG - comes out to 1600$.

So, using 4.50$/gal, insurance goes up 16$/mo for the new vehicle (might be stronger?), I used 17MPG for the X on fuelly, and 18.5 for the tacoma, also on Fuelly. Those are stock numbers, you’re not stock.

Anyway, long of the short - about 20 months to break even with maintenance, insurance, sales tax up front, etc.

So, assuming gas stays at 4.50 you’re looking at about 2 years for payoff.

If you look at the X at 15mpg, and the tacoma STAYING at 18.5, you’re looking at only 10 months. BUT stock to stock the difference is 1.5mpg, so if you do any mods, wheels, tires, etc then you’re looking at the 1.5mpg difference modded to modded too.

If I enjotyed driving the X, I wouldn’t worry about it taking 2 years to make the tacoma worth it. If I didn’t enjoy the X, the human element comes into play too!

I would recommend waiting until the next tacoma. The current gen cruise shenanigans with the transmission - this close to a new gen, I would wait it out.
