    This^^ [just to be cheeky]

My spouse doesn't like to do household repairs - last month, I fixed the kitchen sink drain -
Had to take it all apart, get the clog out [super gross] and go to Lowes to get a metal collar I broke . .
He stood over my shoulder, while I was crammed under the cabinet trying to get a 15yr old fitting off, and tried to tell me how to fix it - I about lost it -

You can do it OR I can do it
But if I am doing said task, I do not want unsolicited advice
If I need help, I know how to ask

Should have told your wife to ONLY get/pay for the oil change - there is a reason most of us call it the 'stealership'
Call this a lesson learned, apologize and don't wonder why she may never wants to take a vehicle in again

See I don't mind upsells per se..I do but I get that they're going to happen. But an upsell that's a complete fib will flip my switch right there.

This. It's about the opportunity cost, real or otherwise, to each person.

I always did my own and my parents' cars when I was younger. It was also a lot easier to dispose of the old stuff back then. Now as a homeowner I have other things that need doing and will cost me more to hire out than an oil change costs me to get done.

I think you touched on your boat being the other task, and I'm sure what you spent for the oil change was far less versus doing that yourself and hiring out the boat work

I would agree, Subaru is one. Sorry, don’t have my Crosstrek owners manual here at the house.

My Duramax is every 5 years.

However, after 2 years I can feel the need to change the fluid. A large bottle of Dot 3 and several bleeds per caliper and the brakes are back to a better feel (firmer). Have I tested brake distances? No. Do the brake feel and inspection give me a warm and fuzzy? Yes. It should give you one too if some guy is towing loads like this down a mountain pass behind you….

This is usually the lightest load on the 28’. There is 9500 lbs of crawlers and 4700 lbs of trailer.

    5.5 tons of rock/road base.

No clue on weight, but I did loads like these this past summer hauling boulders from the mountains. We will just say I was testing out the 8k axles on my GN trailers.

My Lexus IS350, every 36 months/30k miles. I do the brakes every 30-40k miles and the fluid every year since this is my commuter/beater with a heater that I put 20k+ miles on every year.

Wow, it's your fault your wife was duped?

Because she's not an adult or anything, and she's clearly not responsible for her own actions. Or is it sh because she's just a dumb woman?

I know you think you're all a bunch of white knights out to save the women folk. But you're actually being sexist.

I used to go to the drive-up oil change places because it was convenient and 'close enough' cost to me doing it that I appreciated not getting dirty or having to lay on the concrete.

That all changed as they slowly started to introduce 'computer recommended' upselling of useless crap service; things like totally unnecessary transmission service and various fluid replacements that (again) were NOT necessary based on miles or age (of truck).

I finally quit when they started harassing me based on these 'recommendations'. You know - "well, if you don't get this done we can't be responsible if your truck has a major problem real soon". I'm sorry, stupid upselling is bad enough, but attempted emotional blackmail is over the line. Yea, I can handle it but it's the principal of the thing. Some nice person who isn't really car savvy is getting hosed, and if I'm still patronizing the joint, then I'm helping to keep them in business.

I do all my own stuff now unless it requires a hoist or the AC machine.

Crazy, 30 K for brake fluid. Is it just me or is it the one fluid that has reversed in life expectancy? As others seem to be extending (synthetic oils and combinations of tighter tolerances)

Brake fluid has always been like this since I started driving a few decades ago. It's just simple hydraulic systems(minus the high tech anti-braking systems) that need servicing. Do I over service? Yeah I do. I have only been on the side of the road once (Audi S car, common coil pack issue) and I would like to continue that long record.

Water is heavier than brake fluid. It sinks and collects in the lowest parts of the system... the calipers and cylinders...

Yep, brake fluid absorbs moisture...imo, it should be flushed every 10 years.
