    Yeah.
Subaru does the same. We ran in to a Subaru regional field tech while on an Ozark excursion, and we were lucky we did. A buddy was shaking down a Land Cruiser he bought and lost a brake caliper bolt. The tech had all the tools needed in his 1st gen, and he and his wife were nice enough to run my buddy into town where they actually found the right bolt at an Ace Hardware. These are highly-trained engineers that travel to any dealership that needs them for the "big" issues in whatever region they are supporting. Sadly for us, he took a transfer to the PNW region, so we've got to be our own trail mechanics now. He's lurking around here on TW somewhere . . .

I live 40 minutes from the dealer. They sent two guys out with tools and oil to go thru it within a hour of calling them. Residual oil from the change is to blame per them.

I'm not a litigious kind of person but that dealer response/inspection would've had me locking down a good lawyer to take things over

I have not. I sent a couple of acceptable outcomes to the dealer and waiting on a response. I’ll just have to wait and see what they want/offer to do next. I’ve been busy today and will be busy tomorrow on some non-truck related matters. I’m not going to involve corporate unless we reach a stalemate. One great lesson I picked up from a former boss was to always seek a resolution to a problem at the lowest level possible. Elevate as necessary.

Good post. Dealers have many options in situations like this. If traded, they could make it a dedicated loaner, sell it as used Toyota certified, etc.

Yeah, looks like they did a sloppy job of catching the oil as it poured out the filter housing or drain plug and wound up on the top side of the skid plates. Happened to me even though I'm very careful to catch all the oil as its draining, its when you take the bolt out the oil has time to splash off your fingers and hands onto the top of the skids.

I’m in good hands if it comes to that but I hope it doesn’t. I think the response I got initially was sadly what most expect now, the absolute minimum. I’ll bet you there’s a significant percentage of people that would accept “It’s no longer knocking” as evidence it’s “fixed”. Like I posted a few minutes ago, I always seek a resolution at the lowest level possible. Same concept applies to dealers. Start at the bare minimum and hope the problem goes away. Only offer more when you are forced to.

Not acceptable or environmentally okay. I can do an oil change and it will look cleaner after then before the oil change

It’s true some people may not even care, fill it back up with oil and go, not me!

They just spilled a bit of oil, I'd say nothing to worry about. A few drops of oil will look like a bunch when it sheens over water after a rain storm.

    A bunch..and no build thread!
I just had my truck serviced at Toyota. First oil change, etc. I watched them do it..lol. then I went and checked the oil, torqued the wheels and checked my skid plates. All thanks to these threads.

Well after going through the last few pages it seems as if op is getting a raw deal. I have done many oil changes on these cartridge type filters never have I found a cut o'ring but I always inspected it during install. If the tech was paying attention it should have been caught. That being said I did have a double gasket on a can style that wasn't caught till the oil change I was doing and it wasn't leaking it seemed like it was cut in half because half was stuck to the mount. The other thin piece under lip and not noticeable to the eye. I would have a hard time buying the finding, I would be like sell that used car pitch somewhere else. It has synthetic oil, in 5w30 and a little marvel mystery oil along with a lucus additive like cocktail could almost quiet down a little light knock. Seen it and they traded it, after something like this happened. I really thought the would have replaced the motor. I would not like to be the next person to change oil. Good luck op.

I can read that you are being pretty level headed about this. Stand your ground my friend.. Glad you are not caving to the dealer's lame response.

Have they asked for the loaner back yet? If not that’s kind of interesting.

Dealerships aren't looking at instructions on boxes for parts. For simple things like oil changes, they just get them done and verify part #'s and volumes of fluid if not known. If you can't seat an o-ring on a filter housing by the time you're a journeyman without looking at an instruction, you need to find a new line of work.

I imagine the "no significant damage" message was their first card played, expecting to either get a "thats wonderful news!" from a majority of people response, at which point they'd say its ready to be picked up/bring in the loaner. I expect that they understand a small percentage of people will stand their ground and respond back to the "no significant damage" with other expectations of outcomes, at which point they'd begin to play their other cards (exploring trading in probably). They likely want to play their cheapest option cards first to see where Rannyhill stands, and not making such a demanding first response to Ranny with something like "we're through with it, we need the loaner back" type of message. Their "no significant damage" was just a feeler they put out to him, and depending on how he responds, they still have an open door to say "well we didn't find any significant damage on that inspection, BUT we're not through inspecting yet..." If they send a very closed door message to Ranny, they're well informed it could bite them in the butt if he wanted to jump straight into the pathway of litigation.

Just as Ranny is trying to seek resolution at the lowest possible level, they are as well; we all hope that they'll meet eye to eye somewhere in between, with no corporate or lawsuits involved.

Spot on summation of where things are with this. Hold your ground OP but stay polite and professional. I think you can do better than "everything is fine, come get your truck"!

Thats what i hate about some shops that do oil changes...they spill some oil, and hardly clean up if at all. I can honestly say the 2 oil changes i got at the dealer here under toyota care were impeccable, not a drop of oil i could see was spilled.....like it was never done.
