Hey guys, just figured I'd give my two cents on doing an early break in service. I'm aware the 3rd gen Tacomas don't specify any early service before 5,000 miles. I'm a Tech, and although I don't work on Toyotas much professionally, I have performed and overseen many break in services and believe they are always necessary. I decided to do an oil change for my new 2022 Tacoma V6 TRD Off-road and was convinced that it is necessary. The amount of metal particulates/contaminants was very excessive by any healthy running means. So I would suggest any new owner definitely do an oil change around 500 miles. I used Toyota genuine(which happened to actually be cheaper right now than my shops discounted price from our parts suppliers) oil and filter just to ensure any additive necessary in the first 5,000 miles is retained in the system.
Just my two cents as a guy who is rather meticulous. Attached will be images of the results from a 600 mile oil change on a brand new Tacoma that has been treated well and not rodded on. New to this so I'll try to continue to ad my experiences that I think may help others.

Edit: did another oil change at 3,600 miles 3k later, and no metal at all, clean as a whistle. So might vary from engine to engine, but definitely a lot of metal in mine that I'm glad I changed out.

Definitely a lot more metal in your first OC than mine. My oil was clean and only a hint of glitter in the filter - did my first around 1500 miles.

Thanks for your input, it did seem a bit excessive to me as well. I'll make sure to keep an eye on it. Just assumed that others would want to see. It's good to know I'm not the only one that wanted to do the OC before the 5k mark.

    Welcome to TW

    I'm planning on oil/filter change @ 1000 miles.

Good info OP. I'm waiting on delivery still and was wondering about this. Could you comment on "don't drive at constant speeds for extended periods" per the manual? I've got a short 200-300 mile road trip once I get the truck. Obviously, highway miles at a constant speed. Work avoiding for the first 1000 miles?

Hey John, yeah that's common and most anything with a combustion engine and/or transmission especially CVT's advise that. Just creating "even wear". Every 10mins or so (insert opinion on time here) just make sure it downshifts and revs up for a little bit. Keep the revs and gears changing somewhat regularly and you'll be totally fine. Giving it a few heat and cool cycles before a long trip would be a good idea too.
