I have 5100's on the rear now. I just picked up a set of new extended 5100's from a member here. He seems to remember the hardware having 3 washers but the packets he gave only have 2 and one is unopened. I remember my old ones only having 2 also but not sure.
I remember them set up like pic 1 with just 2 washers. I'm seeing lots of pics set up like pic 2 with 3 washers.
    Do they come both ways?

IIRC, though I may stand corrected here is how I did mine:

Thick shiny washer concave side up rubber bushing shock bucket thin shiny washer concave side up rubber bushing thick dark washer concave side down top nut also that shock boot should be pulled up and snapped onto that grooved ring on the shock rod at the very bottom with a zip tie to hold it on there and it's a good idea to put a zip tie on the bottom of the shock boot around the thick of the body of the shock to hold that in position as well.

so you had 3 washers? Also, on the lowrange offroad install vid i watched to see what set up they had they went: washer concave side up, rubber bushing, washer concave side down, frame/shock bucket, rubber bushing, washer concave side down, nut.

Yeah they're supposed to come with three washers, I would do it the way long range did it.

Interesting....I'm pretty sure the unopened hardware pack with on of the shocks only has 2.

Guess I'll email Bilstein and ask them why my 2 shocks only have 2 washers each and not 3.
    Thanks for the pic.

Also, are these extended or normal length 5100's you're running? If extended, what springs do you run and stock bump stops?

For what it's worth because of global happenings, to keep up with supply and demand QC has tanked, I got shocks for a first gen 5 lug couple of months ago for a friend of mine and one of the top nuts was threaded at about a 30° angle instead of straight on, fortunately I had a viable replacement on hand but seeing this doesn't really surprise me right now, it's not typical of Bill stein, I'm sure they will make it right for you quickly, but it is what it is because of how things are.

These are the extended 5100's but they're actually a little short, and frankly put just not enough shock for my application at this point.

I'm about to go to high-end mid travel; I have the parts sitting in my garage I just haven't had the time to burn them on, but I'm going to have the archive garage shock tower relocate, doing Fox 2.0 smoothies with ressis, right now I'm running Wheeler's super bumps on their tabbed strike plates and U bolt flip, leaf pack is a Gen 2 heavy duty Dakar plus the main leaf from a TSB 3rd gen leaf pack, along with archive garage 3.6 Fab shackles and archive garage Hammer hangers and high clear cross tube.

But to put things in perspective my "around town" weight is about 5700 lbs.

Right now I'm sitting at about 4 in of lift in the rear and the 5100s act as limiting straps, the fox shocks I have are 14 inch travel IIRC and I believe these are 10?

Mine are the extended 5100's and will be paired with a set of dakar's medium duty with extra leaf (so i guess heavy duty now). I was going to try to get away with using stock bump stops but now I think they might be too short for the collapsed length of the shock....Might get a hockey puck or something similar and bolt it to the frame to give an extra drop for the top.

Thank you. for some reason i remember my 5100's on my truck only having 2 washers but maybe they had 3 and I just forgot. But I'm fairly certain the unopened hardware pack for the new shocks only has 2 washers....

That configuration above is for the extended 5100s. Go to BilStein's website and find everything you need to know about the shocks you have. Very simple and it's free.

Some brands of rear shock only come with 2 washers. I'd bet it would be OK to run just 2 washers. Though 3 would be ideal.

I bet Bilstein will send you the third washer no issues if you call them.

Confirmed my kit only has 2 washers. Bilstein said since these were contracted to them by RCD to build they won't do anything. They did send me a link to where to buy a replacement kit from summit racing. The link they sent was for the same hardware kit I already have with only 2 washers haha...so now I'm confused on what some get 3.
