Interesting. I've got a Wilco hitch swing thingy but I'd assume thats too much weight to use the pivoting receiver with the moto+bike. I think it's only rated for like 250lb (Rigd is similar, I believe).

I successfully had my Talaria Sting and 1Up rack on the pivoting portion without it blowing apart but that's about as much weight as I'd want to push it with.

 

Yeah I'm surprised there aren't better options for swingout hitch carriers that can carry motos.

RakAttach makes one that is supposed to handle a dirt bike. I emailed back and forth with them a bit but wasn't getting satisfactory answers to my questions. Using it would also extend the moto carrier another 10-12" rearward, and it is already very long with the rear arm.

Rated for 275lb, but unlike Wilco and Rigd they don't state that you can still tow with the main receiver which is a deal breaker for me. I'd argue the photo with the KTM on the swing out is well over 275lb with the carrier unless it's a 125cc....maybeee

I think the limitation lives in the hinge design - you can only have so much weight on one point especially when dealing with cantilevered force. I agree that there's got to be a way to support more weight maybe with a second articulating arm support or something - I'm only the son of an engineer, not one myself though ha!

I'm looking for a decent swing out also. Would be nice to move the mtb(s) or moto bike to the side and have full access to the rear of the X1. Just not convinced the current swing outs are made for more than bike weights.

That's a small two-stroke KTM, probably ok swung out when stopped and ok when latched for driving. My adv 500 with exxon valdez tank would definitely not survive swung out on that without bending something.

Looked at the rakattach specs and the website, lots of distance measurements but nothing on weight capacities which you'd kindof expect. "Bombproof" seems a bit unfounded and dramatic without the vitals. Do vendors not publish weight capacities for liability purposes?

edit: see one line that states "Rated to carry up to 275 lb" - open, closed?

edit2: just talked to 1up. 275# is open or closed. obvs have to consider weight of rack too. bars and welds will hold much more it's the bolts/fixtures that are the weight limiting factor. IMO 1up is a great vendor with great products.

 

When I emailed them they told me the weight limit was 400lbs. With a carrier weighing 50 and a moto weighing around 275 I wouldn't have a problem.

It's possible the 275lb weight limit is for the small or medium size and 400 for the large. They did mention the moto version as a second support that goes underneath the arm when the swingout is open. They don't show that on their diagrams or on the photos.

The inconsistent info is one reason I decided not to go with their product.

 

Interesting! Yea, see that would be a big selling point and something worth publicizing. They should also get tow rated and it would be the best option out there IMO.

I'm a two moto household now anyways, so the reality for me is that a small utility trailer is most likely in my future.

The ~400# version was a limited run, they don't currently plan on offering anything with capacity >275# that would typically be marketed for motos.

Thanks for following up with them! At least we know that option has been eliminated.

The setup I have now works well for some trips but not all. I still have my previous carrier that I'll bring on trips where I want the bike inside the canopy. When the carrier is in the down position I can fully lower the tailgate to get the MTB in or out. It just got really old doing that day after day...

Hopefully someone else will step up and make something. There are lots of vehicles out there with motos on hitch carriers. You'd think there would be a decent market for something burly with a carrier built onto a swingout.

A trailer would definitely be convenient in some cases. For a lot of my trips it wouldn't be wise to bring considering the amount of fire road driving I do where turning around or backing up is not an option. For a trip where you have a base camp it would be great.

Every option is a compromise.

Initially I was using carriage bolts per another person's reco, but ended up switching to hammer bolt instead. It's basically a t-nut bolt if that makes sense. The carriage bolt ended up turning inside the slot and bending the extrusion a bit so I couldn't get a good enough grab to tighten them down. The hammer bolts were 10/10!

@gnardoggie I'm interested in what size carriage bolt you used, I didn't have that problem. I do like the idea of the hammer bolts especially since they're 45's. Did you still use the Riversmith mounts or just go with a spacer? PS - I'm the other guy on FB...

 

Funny enough I used the exact size that you posted about, 3/8” and everything. I wonder if it’s just a slight tolerance issue with the bolts as I only had two of the six spin on me.

I used three riversmith mounts - simply had to drill them out slightly to fit and also used a 1/2” in the same place as your mount to help with the spacing and protrusion of the head of the hammer bolt.

XPOTRPR, So is that a water filtration system for your tank? Are you planning on bad water?
Looks like an interesting set up. The whole set up looks very good.

 

Small inline filter prior to pump, pump into accumulator tank.. then out to hose bib. We fill up with Potable water at home (garden hose) prior to trips and top off where we can when needed. and thank you.

 

Oops! I should have realized that was an accumulator! Dugh!

 

all good! I havent even pressurized it to match my pump yet.. and the factory set 10psi is already helping. Pump doesnt kick on as much and I can actually have a slight drizzle at the faucet without the pump kicking on/off constantly.

 

What bracket/mount are you using for your CO2 tank?

 

its the mount that comes with the tank from PolyPerformance. I opened up 3 of the holes to allow for T nut hardware into the bed rails, and then used rubberized standoffs that have threaded insets in them to rest up against the bedside. it clears the top of the fender well perfectly. I will get some better pictures today. I got the inserts from Ace... I'll see if I can get more pics and info on them as well.

 

Okay new update on my latest suspension research, there is so much research to do! We are not doing a rear or front bumper. Just a Super Pacific with a buildout in the back. Assuming 600lbs constant.
