My 2010 Tacoma has a rear chrome bumper that is rusting. It seems as though the chrome plating is not complete and the corrosion is seeping from the steel behind the bad chrome seal. Anyone else having this trouble? I polished the bumper a few weeks ago and now the rust is back. I took it to the Toyota dealership and the Service Adviser gave the it's normal speech and that it was just surface and to just buff it out. They told me to call Toyota and open a claim. This is just BS!!! Thoughts?

i'd call toyota customer service and open a claim, stating what the dealer told you. there have been a few people on here getting their rear bumpers replaced under warranty b/c of this and something was stated about a defect in the chroming process, IIRC.

My 2011 that is less than 4 months old has rust on the bumper. I just washed it yesterday and found rust on both ends on the edges (that I found a couple of weeks ago) and now there is rust in the middle on both sides of the license plate. I have an appointment at the dealer for an alignment and new tire mounting. They are going to look at it. I want to see if I can get a colormatched (black) bumper to replace it. I do not want another chrome one if it is just going to rust again before spring even gets here.

rust means the chrome has failed. You can't clean it, you can just keep cleaning off the rust stains from the holes in your chrome. IT'll flake soon enough. Or might stay the same for years. But its cheap chinese chrome apparently.

Many others, including me, have had similar problems with rusting rear chrome bumpers.

Contact your dealer and get it replaced under warranty. There should be no trouble getting it replaced.

Maybe they will fix the bumper, install a quiet blower fan and a 4 leaf stack in the rear. Wish in one hand....

I went to two dealerships yesterday for a rusty rear bumper. (2010) My bumper started to rust last winter when it was a month old and it is worse now. At the first dealership the service manager was a complete a-hole. I knew i would not get much from him the moment I spoke to him. He said it could be cleaned of and scrubbed some off with steel wool. He said I need to talk to some one else and had to wait a until the beginning of next month for the guy to come back.
The second dealership was much more helpful but he said he needed to talk to Toyota. I was the 5th person in on Friday with a rusty bumper.
I did get the impression from both that they were told to not change the bumper if the rust can be cleaned off. If we wait for the rust to be extensive then your warranty will probably have expired. I'm going to call Toyota. I would suggest everyone do that and maybe they will push a TSB.

Having the same problem on my 2010. The only thing I have found so far to prevent the rust for any period of time is to wipe it down with motor oil. This one seems worse than my first 2010. The chrome is on par with Chinese baby moon hub caps I had a few years ago.

I, too, just found rust on my bumper and am PISSED. Seriously? I just bought the truck in May. I had my Ranger for 11 years and not a single spot of rust on the bumper. EVER. I'll talk to the dealer but I'm a girl so I'm sure they will think me hysterical and stupid. You know, you pay $26+ for something and you kind of expect it to not start deteriorating within 8 months.

I was just at the dealership for another issue. I showed the service writer the rust on my 3 1/2 month old truck. I tried to get them to install a black one, but a no-go. They said they can only replace warranty parts with same part. BS. I talked to the parts dept and he told me that the black one was cheaper and that he has ordered quite a few of the chrome bumpers. But I asked the service writer if they were just going to replace it again in another 3 months when it develops rust. He said it will be an updated chrome bumper and will not rust. More BS. But, they can replace it ten times under warranty. I don't care. So, if you go to dealership, ask about the "updated" bumper and see what their face looks like.

When I bought my 2010 Tacoma a year ago, they made me initial a section of the paperwork that said "The bumper to bumper warranty covers everything except the bumpers". Of course the B to B warranty doesnot include clutches either. Mine started slipping at 14K, it was replaced under warranty. So..... rusty chrome bumpers may get replaced if it can be proved it is a defect.

Great. This does not sound promising. They already told me over the phone they will just take a picture and submit it to Toyota. I said, "It's rusting. It's obvious. Why do we need a picture?" She told me that is the "process." Process of BS. Let the games begin. I'm going in Monday. I know I'm going to lose my temper. If only I could cry on cue....

DEALER is trying to protect you and toyota's money. Warranty cuts deep into the company's bottom line. Its a lot easier to let someone else tell you know and give the process owner the chance to say yes too.

Friday i was at two dealerships for the rear bumper with not a lot of progress. Monday on my way to work some boob rear ended me. Problem solved. Body guy is putting on a color matched bumper. The cost is nearly the same.

Rusty bumper problem is still an issue. My 3 month old 2010 has a rear bumper just covered in rust, really disappointing. Dealership is replacing no questions asked but I wonder if the new one will do the same. You would think Toyota would have looked into this problem since it is so common. I am also getting the interior fan motor swapped out and some electronic gizmo that prevents the acceleration problem. Otherwise the truck is awesome.

    I have a 2011 with the same problem, http://www.tacomaworld.com/forum/2nd...my-bumper.html

I went to the dealership where i bought it and spoke to my salesman and he took me straight to the head of the maintenance dept. Well they told me that i am not the first person with this problem. Well they said the problem isn't my bumper its a combination of the brake dust from my rear calipers and the calcium crap PennDOT uses on the roads up here.

They said if it comes back this summer that they will take care of it with a replacement.

I have a 2010 and the bumper is rusting like everyone else. I also looked at my TRD chrome exhaust tip and it is way worse than the bumper. I am thinking about ditching the chrome and spraying it black with high temp engine paint.
