    I'm a second gen guy....but certainly not a third gen or 2GR hater at all.

    Aside from a longer stroke, which gives the 1GR the extra 500cc of displacement and a very slight low end torque advantage.....they're quite similar and both part of the same modular engine family.

    But here in N. America, there has been a slow removal of the 1GR....both single and dual VVT-i versions. It began with the tweak of the Tundra a few years back. The 4.6 V8 replaced the 1GR has the base engine. The 5.7 and 4.6 V8s are modular and saved production cost for Toyota, while returning similar MPG.

    Next came the current Taco with the 2GR. The FJ is long gone and the current 4Runner will soon give way to a new model without the 1GR.

    It's all about production cost and CAFE....as the 1GR was not the most efficient engine on paper and the real world.
