Here's a thought question about Connected Services...

I just opted out of the connected services.. (the trial ended a month ago). I then got an email from att saying that my data plan was canceled. Which leads me to believe that toyota was paying for it for the marketing data, and would continue forever until I opted out. Now here's the question.. would you be willing to be tracked by toyota for whatever purposes (currently in the T&C's) if they held out a carrot? lets say free SOS or even wifi. What is that privacy worth... how much do we give away for "free" or to use a service ala facebook or google.

    Oh look, another mod....

The Connected Services & Siri are way over priced in my opinion and not worth it. Mine is about to run out soon and when it does, I'll let it.

I specifically bought before TSS-P. CS would be even worse for me. No matter what scare tactics GM tried back in the day, I firmly feel that my phone will be much more reliable if the worst should happen.

I think it is there on iOS, but do know that on Android, it has an emergency calling feature that will automatically call out if there is no response after an impact. That's good enough for me.

Never bought into this connected services. My main concerns with the truck where my android connected or paired with the truck and it did. Nothing else matters.

I've always been of the opinion that if the truck had cell service to create a wifi network than so does my phone. Why pay twice for the same thing?

I find the app controlled remote start to be sporadic at best, routinely taking multiple attempts to start my truck. I wouldn't pay for the service that I can barely use for free. I'll delete the app when my trial is up, if not before.

Doesn’t mean you have to make it easy for them, though.

Is this the sos button thing? Do I need to press it and calls them and have them cancel? Is that the only thing I need to do?

    Yeah, good question.

I just took delivery of my new Tacoma. I don't have a smart phone (and won't in the foreseeable future).

I've been getting all the marketing emails from Toyota on activating, setting up service, enrolling, etc. I'm not interested in any of it.

But, is there something I need to do to NOT be in the connected system?

at this point, it's less about "naked, peeing on the street corner", and more about controlling who is allowed to take and distribute pictures of you peeing on the street corner.

There was a sticker on near the map lights that said to hold the SOS button and then customer service would come on.. you can then tell them to turn it off.. (since I had previously registered with toyota, I did it from the App.. I atleast I think I did.. hopefully it turned off the tracking!)

I believe the Opt Out process is more complex than that. Check the Owners Manual or Navigation Supplement. The full details are likely in there.

Thanks, I saw that instruction in one of the emails they sent as well...sooooo...they want me to activate the system (i.e., push the button, talk to a person, give them my information) to deactivate the system. Right. Might be better off just doing nothing.

Where did I leave that tinfoil hat again?

I'm assuming that none of this (activate it to deactivate it, do nothing, or just activate it all) has anything to do with my navigation system continuing to work?

You are assuming they can't track you since you aren't paying any longer. Wishful thinking I submit.

Remember your keyfob remote start will still work even after your Remote Connect trial expires. You will lose the ability to start via the app, but the keyfob stays working.

My service is about to expire on the anniversary date from: May 14, 2021

    I won't be re-newing mine.

    What is this concern?

    Tracking after the fact?

Yes. I think the concern might be tracking after the fact. Why does anyone think they can't track you after you stop paying? Unless they have something in writing that specifically states they can't connect, aka track, you if you aren't paying my guess is they are still tracking you...just not collecting a fee for the service that's no longer active.
