Hi all, I know tacomas are notorious for ticking but I was wondering if this is the normal ticking. It's a 09 4.0. It's really loud on cold start up but goes away after a couple seconds. It also makes the noise when I'm accelerating between 2k and 3k. This was just after changing the oil.

The first video is hard to tell but almost sounds like an exhaust manifold leak, the 2nd video I don't hear anything.

I know this sounds basic but make sure you have enough oil. I have a buddy who drives challenger that started ticking, told him to add some more oil since he was leaking a bit and the tick went away.

    Oh look, another mod....
Tacoma's tick as much and as loud as your Grandma's cuckoo clock. Get used to it.

Thanks all for the reply. I actually think I sourced what the sound is coming from. I started my truck and started to feel around the manifold and I can feel a pretty good leak coming from the drivers side. I guess it makes sense that it would make the sound under acceleration but go away on decel. Guess I'll be looking for a new manifold... yay $$$

I actually just changed my oil to make sure the level was good. Oil was topped off, if not a little bit over filled and still the noise. I'm pretty sure it's due to a leaky manifold

That would make sense, exhaust manifold leaks tend to seal off somewhat and get quieter as things heat up and expand.

If the manifold itself isn't leaking or warped you may just need gaskets.
Nothing wrong with just doing one side if the other looks good yet and isn't setting any converter codes.

Yes you can use those if you are in a state that doesn't require CARB certified converters, we've had decent luck with Cataran coverters at the shop but I will say aftermarket converters can be hit or miss it seems no matter what brand they are on wheather they will fit without modification and/or throw a converter code in a few hundred miles.

Unfortunately it's not the gasket. I can feel the leak from around this area here. I'm just worried that if I replace one side the other is not far behind since they look about the same condition

Ah ok, we don't see much rust here and I don't see the stamped steel manifolds crack or warp much so I was just making sure.

Hmmm I know the Toyota v8 4.7 tend to break exhaust manifolds. Didn’t really hear about the Toyota 4.0.

why not get some aftermarket racing headers? URD or whoever makes them. Apparently really frees up some horsepower on our trucks.

Do you have to get a tune for that then?

Not required…..but….you will get the full benefit of the headers after a tune.

Mine recently (165,000 miles) has started to sound like a cross between a hot air popcorn popper and a washing machine.
