Seems common on steep terrains. Probably couldn't install a large enough catch can. Usually happens to cylinders 5 or 6, most likely from the rear side of heads not being able to drain back fast enough. Hope you have an extended warranty.

One reason I empty the catch can every couple thousand miles. Easy to do, sometimes hard to remember to do. Sorry to hear about this OP

Except it's not amazing off road for all the reasons I listed (and a few more). And at least I offered reasons for my opinion, unlike you. For a truck that's marketed so heavily towards off road use, Toyota gave it a helluva lot of anti-off road features that hinder it, and they choose to do that. Having the title "off road" in the model name goes way farther to get people to think this is such an amazing off roading truck, than the actual performance of the truck on the trails.

The thing is hiPSI, lots of people do spend 10s of thousands to build these trucks into serious "hard" off roaders. All I'm saying is there is a lot to overcome to actually make them amazing off roaders. "So don't even think your definition is correct"'.

Bring back the pre-Tacomas! My '87 kicked ass on the trail! That 22RE rocked! I climbed a hill so steep, the front wheels were in the air and had no problems with the motor. What's with the "new" technology?

Definitely true. I was a little harsh on OP on my initial post. The real issue is catch can or not, this issue can happen with this motor on not just off camber situations, but hill climbs in general. Obviously bad design for an offroad focused truck. I have owned nothing but Tacomas but not anymore. They can't even design a third brake light correctly. Fought that for 6 months and truck still has mold residue (100% disabled vet with COPD/Asthma). The tacoma is really designed to be ridden primarily on the street. If I was heavily into offroading again, I would get whatever is cheapest - old ranger, old Tacoma, Jeep, etc and build that up and not even title or register it.

I agree. Pretty soon Toyota will be marketing Rav4s as “off roaders” too… oh wait.

    My point,
Is my vs you vs Joe vs Katy is all different with respect to off road definition.
Katy might think this truck is amazing off road because she came from a CRV.
A rock buggy owner would laugh at the Tacoma, even built up. See what I mean?
And there are a lot more Katy's in the world than rock buggy owners.

I don't understand how oil locked the piston up, I'm pretty sure dumping oil from a catch can isn't going into a cylinder. Now oil starvation, depending on the angle and incline, yes, that I can see. Never really climbed any real steep inclines with my Taco, now my old FJ40's, I idled up some so steep you could barely walk up them.

[Yes, I've seen where the 3.5 especially can smoke a LOT when going up inclines due to oil retention issues in the head]

I'm well aware of that. So did the catch can dump into the intake which then transferred the oil to cylinder #5?

None of us care what “Katy who came from a CRV” thinks is a capable off roader, we care about people’s opinions who know what they’re talking about - on any subject. Do you ask a librarian how to remodel your kitchen? Ya, she may have an opinion just like Katy has about the Tacoma’s off road prowess, but maybe a contractor who does kitchen remodels would be a better person to get that advice from on that, ya? The things that I said hinder the Taco’s off road performance aren’t even my opinion - They are features that are in fact on the truck, and anyone who knows off roading also knows those things are not ideal. Not everything about the Tacoma is bad off road, it does have some things going for it. But that unnecessarily low hanging exhaust getting bashed on a rock, or hydrolocking the motor because the trail got off camber for a little too long, etc… aren’t doing this truck any favors on the trails… and Toyota purposely chose to give the Taco these anti-off road features, while marketing it as if it’s actually designed for the trails.

Years ago I met a Toyota owner who had just crossed a river. He insisted he hadn't sucked water into his engine, so I pulled him, unsuccessfully, trying to start it. Finally pulled his plugs and found water in one cylinder. After we drained it, the truck started, and he drove it home, tho it probably had a bent rod. Those 22R engines were tough.

Yes, I read it. Why did the catch can dump back into the engine in the first place? I'm aware of how a PVC valve works, is that done [catch can to PVC valve] to keep the engine from ''coding?" I've read multiple times where the PVC can pull excessive oil from a poor draining head into a cylinder, the catch can just exacerbated the issue?

I have a 2nd gen myself and the other Yota stuff I've owned was from the late 60's [5 FJ40s from 1969 to 1976] to 1985.

I helped my friend wrenching on his Jeep Pentastar and I thought something was wrong with his engine when we took the intake plenum off. Oil everywhere just oozing out like crazy. We were googling and searching if that was normal. Local Jeep guru said YES it’s a POS design by the OEM. To install a oil catch can since the OEM pcv design does a horrible job scavenging the oil vapors.

The catch can is between the PCV valve and the intake manifold, so it doesn't dump "back" anywhere, technically. It's just a reservoir for oil to get caught until its drained manually. To go "back" it would have to get pushed backwards through the PCV valve. In this case it apparently filled (not sure if rapidly filled at the time before the problem or if a cumulative fill over some longer amount of time, OP would have to comment of this) and then when at capacity it "overflowed" into the intake via the same route that the factory PCV system flows.

I have the same question about if the CC helps, hurts or is only relevant because it wasn't emptied recently.
