It was way more fun, and cheaper when playing off road like that with my motorcycles.

 

The "cheaper" part, though, is debatable depending on the quality of your medical insurance.

Oil circulation is a weak point for me...
What happens oil-wise if you use a transverse design motor longitudinally?
When the 3.5 for Tacoma was originally announced, it had a 7GR-FKS designation and later 'corrected' to 2GR-FKS. Supposedly, the 2GR-FKS is transverse and the 7GR-FKS is/was to be for longitudinal mounting.

 

It didn’t “dump back in”. After the oil level in the catch can rose above the air line going to the intake and the PCV valve was still sucking oil cause of how the truck was sitting it then began sucking oil out of the catch can it’s self.

So continuous flow from submerged PCV through catch can direct into engine.

 

At least it died doing what it loves

 

The catch can was emptied immediately before the ride. I also checked the oil level to make sure it was full and did a little once over of everything before going out last night. It probably filled over several off camber events throughout the night, not all at once on this one obstacle.

 

^This. I have Quads, a dual-sport MC and a Dune Buggy I can (and do) take many more places then I'm willing to take my Taco. That's not to say that my Taco doesn't get it's wheels dirty; I take it on some moderate trails but doing anything more then that is not what I bought it for.

Ok first of all I'm not under some impression that the Tacoma is an off road beast that can do severe trails but I don't think there's any denying that it's one of the more capable vehicles available new right now. Not saying it's the most capable available new right now, but it's pretty far up there.

Any factory vehicle literally ever comes with compromises off road, besides probably a Rubicon or a Sasquatch Bronco equipped with the factory armor no stock vehicles are doing more than "moderate" 4x4 trails without modification.

Also Toyota isn't "purposely giving the Tacoma anti-off road features" is just not true. An exhaust crossover being a low point is a very small sin, oversights like that exist on every stock off roader. Pretty sure it hangs that low so it's not roasting the transfer case. Every engine has oiling issues at severe angles. While Toyota probably could've done a much better job to mitigate these risks you do have to be at a pretty severe angle before damage is done. My 3rd gen has almost 100k on it and I've spent a lot of time at 30+ degrees with no issues.

Again, again, again I'm not saying that the Tacoma is the off road god people can act like it is, but moderate trails are pretty good for a stock or lightly modified rig. Almost everything you see is heavily built once you're past that.

 

Bikes and quads have a harder time doing steep climbs, off-camber obstacles, or water two feet deep.

Would you take your quad up this?

 

Pretty sure the atlas was based off the d300 also soooooo........ It just uses the same stock sizing cast case like the OE and then they made their own gearsets. Unlike Hero and now midnight with billet cases and less gear selections.

Yikes ,I'd probably ride my trials bike up that while doing a wheelie. My Tacoma ,never.

 

Do you think some type of self leveling bracket on the oil catch can would have helped for off camber events?

Oil will still be sucked into the pcv hose from engine vacuum . The problem is oil pooling in the rear of the cylinder head , either being drawn into the pcv hose or thru the valve guides in the cylinder head

 

Give me a break. You’re comparing a rock crawler to a Honda Civic. Where does the Tacoma fit in?
