I'm just thinking worst case, shattering the stub or enough of it to not work as intended to hold everything together. But again, 3rd gen way under powered, no front locker. I shouldnt ever blow up the 934

    Too many to remember
100% the wheel is held on by the unit bearing, if you break a front axle or birfield your wheel will not fall off. All the birfield does is retain the bearings. This is why I much prefer a D44 setup because of you brake an axle it doesn’t matter, the wheel is bolted to the spindle snout, same goes for a full floating rear

Ask around and see if anyone has a cv with a torn boot collecting dust that isn’t doing them any good. I got a pair of oem for free just by asking.

Murphy does come around from time to time and prove things wrong. Here's an example of the outer stub shearing off the birfield and then loosing a bearing thus the wheel now wanting to come off from the bearing separating. Never say never weird shit happens.

Just carry a large enough bolt with a big washer to capture the unit bearing it the event that fails the bolt will keep it all together. I was out at fordyce creek and came across a Jeep that has this problem and I solved it with some hardware I had.

The other thing interesting about this video Is Trail Mater thinks he needs to make or modify a rotor to put in between the pads when a simple piece of wood should work. Especially when he just tapes it into place.

Christ. How much was that recovery? You know, when you add the bent frame and front bumper.

Seems like a scoot back to town for a Napa CV could have saved a lil $$$. But I did learn some things about Tacoma unit bearing preload that I didn't know and how to unlock a 4th gen RAM with its antenna so there's that.

Yes you can do that. But from experience the seals that ride on the birfield keep debris and stuff out of the bearing if it's not sealed there then you'll still damage and kill your bearing. Hence why I carry and empty spare birfield now, use to carry spare axles. If shit hits the fan I want to get off the trail and with as little potential more damage than necessary.

Well when ya got a bunch of junk rotors lying around vs wood kinda makes sense but yeah either one would work hell he did it with sockets there.
Expensive. He even commented how much they flex and twist and doesn't like doing them. It looks like that one didn't move too much so he must of had a brace in there and it still flexed some. He only towed him to a clearing then went back to repair the following day. If he hadn't of moved him you gotta think how many assholes may have just drug the truck out of the way and damaged it worse. Either way having a spare bearing and birfield coulda saved a lot of headache there.

A big lesson with these recovery videos is actually knowing your vehicle how to fix it and having some sort of oh shit supplies to make some trailside repairs so you don't end up in this guy's situation.

Makes sense, the Jeeps are sealed. Plus it would probably throw a code with the abs sensor not having a tone ring. I’ll probably do that same as you.

You mean a spare hub bearing assembly, right? Without a press, a spare bearing wouldn't do ya much good out on the trail.

I agree with that, some trails we do you don’t drive out of without a repair.
Im willing to bet that’s what he means.

Ive never had to drop a skid plate for replacing a cv axle, usually i leverage off the skid plate. Most recently ive been using a Gzila cv removal rope, it made all the repairs we did at BOTW really easy and quick.

Ive seen more broken cvs from guys without a front locker, than ones with a locker. Usually wheel speed and bumping it breaks it, the front locker really lets you control crawling.

Every time I've tried that method one time couldn't get it to go. Remove skid plate and hammered it with a prybar and it went. I've gotten them to come out just prying as well but not all the time. I was giving worse case scenario.

This is random, but I’m in Puerto Rico and there’s an insane amount of Tacomas here. Only seen 3rd gens and one 1st gen, no 2nds.
