Beta 300RR, we can make them street legal here in Idaho. Was carrying a saw on that ride too…though pretty much have to carry one all the time, with the mass amounts of dead fall we get. Riding is darn near endless out here, have one of the best OHV trail systems in the country.

Oh I take it with a grain of salt too. There’s a wide spectrum out there, and lumping a ZR2 with FR lockers, quality suspension, factory sliders and reasonable factory skids to a Passport TrailSport that’s literally just a few appearance bits is hardly fair.

In the case of the TRD Off Road it’s worth keeping in mind that the difference between that and an SR5 won’t even cover adding a locker making it a better starting point if you’re upgrading it. I agree though, finding places the locker was useful but not too risky without proper armor was hard.

I wouldn't want to try it but I've seen some guy on dirt bikes do shit that even that tacoma in the video can't do. It's all in how big your balls are, and out in UT they have traction. I'd place a bet it's been done a few times out there. Hell I've seen videos of stock 4runners and tacomas doing Hells revenge and going up hells gate in Moab. But I think both of ya'll have points as to some places a bike can get you that a full size can't and some places and trails a full size can do that a bike can't. Like you'll never see a bike do some of the waterfall and ledge obstacles we have out here. But we can't go on some of these really narrow and tight trails that they can do.

What is that old saying about four wheel drive? You don’t need it to go off-road, it just gets you stuck further away from help. ;):) Think that can be said for all the off-roady add-ons.

Nice I'm so jealous. Luckily my cousin has a cabin upstate NY where I get to ride a couple times a year.

Geez guys, I comparing people who buy Tacoma's and their perception of what Off Road means.
250K people a year buy a Tacoma. Does anyone really think 250K people will even take it down a dirt road?
My point is off road has a different meaning depending on the person.
I need to quit while I'm behind.

The Tacoma is a Swiss army knife: it's equally shitty at a lot of things.

But yes, I agree with you. Great for light trails by my definition. I'll rent a POS ATV for harder stuff.

... It's a fun swiss army knife, though

Main reason I moved here was for the riding, everything from desert to high country alpine and everything in between.

That picture of mine was Custer Peak Lookout Tower.

These guys have a fairly decent video of it, couple ass pucker moments when they almost lost a bike over the edge. Hundred or so feet drop where they did it.

    Yeah
The river is a foot deep and the climb up out of the river valley is a 2 mile long accent. The water had nothing to do with anything. It hydrolocked with oil not water.

I agree that the Taco is still one of the most capable new vehicles, but that isn’t really saying much. I disagree that Toyota isn’t purposely putting anti-off road features on vehicles that they market as off roaders though. I’ve seen Toyota pretending to make off roading a real focus, while building their trucks to be more and more neutered off road (and street friendly) every year, beginning when they went to IFS in 1986. When it all comes down to it, I’m coming from the stance that trails that are a breeze in my 25 year old 4Runner, the 3rd gen Tacoma is cluky, awkward, and struggles in the several different ways that I mentioned earlier in the thread. My old ‘98 taco never struggled like that. As time goes on, Toyota markets and pushes its “off road” heritage more and more, while actually building each generation noticeably less capable and less nimble than the previous generation. Even practically every review of the 3rd gen I’ve ever seen, they talk about how it “really shines once you hit the dirt” and “that’s what they’re really made for”, etc… but as a fan of Toyota trucks for the past 35 years (and having owned 14 Toyota 4x4s myself) I think that’s a big load of horseshit. The 3rd gen design is absolutely focused on the street, but it does decent in the dirt, although not nearly as good as what Toyota used to make.

What may surprise some though, is that my 3rd gen is still my favorite and the best of all the 14 Toyota 4x4s I’ve owned, just not so much as an off roader. I love it for it’s comfort, reliability, utility, looks, etc…

Even though the older trucks were better off roaders. They never really marketed them doing anything much harder than a dirt road. And I agree with you, have been driving Toyotas for 30 years. My 3rd Gen is my favorite out of all of them, even if it isn’t as capable as my early trucks.

Dang that definitely is some gnarly riding...I don't think I would attempt that on my wr250r. (I'm only like 5'7") Maybe on a dedicated trail bike..something like a honda trail bike crf230f/250f. (Anything lower weight and/or lower seat height)

Respectfully, get with the times man. What was off road 25 years ago is not off road now. Pretty much everything has been... Watered down. #socialmedia

Again, Katy thinks it's a badass off roader because it out performs her CRV and her perception is... Reality.

Yeah it is, I am only 5’8” and seem to do ok. Though I may get a Beta X-Trainer for my next bike, same engine as my 300RR, but in a chassis that is 10% smaller, lower seat height and roughly 25 lbs lighter. Sure do like those 300 2-Strokes.

Have picture of the same spot where those guys almost pitched it off the edge, it is super tricky and soft.

You guys have just proven that Toyota is meeting the needs of their customers reducing off-road capabilities over the years

Ahhh just moved to a different mode of back country exploring since the trucks weren’t cutting it, even the old ones, quit hard core wheeling years ago and pretty much just use the trucks as a moto hauler.

Which they used to market to that demographic too.

The truck was never the back road vehicle. It was to transport the back road vehicle. Same hold true today.
I would be an idiot to think my truck could go places a motocross or a side by side could go...
