@ian408 gave you some great feedbacks OP.

My first dslr was a Canon Rebel XS so I feel ya on limitations regarding what you want to use it for. I don’t know anything about Nikon but there are some great used Canons out there that is well within your budget. I’ve used a total of five canon bodies and out of those five, two I bought new (canon rebel XS, canon R6). Majority of the lens I’ve owned currently and in the past have been used or refurbished. Have you looked into a used full frame from Canon? The 5Dmkiii is a great camera for indoors as it does great in low lights. I had it for a short period of time before selling it and getting my current Canon R6.

Good luck with whichever route you decide to go. Hope whichever camera you get does everything you need it to

I was just thinking. If you're not a 100% sure, why not rent the combo you hope to get? BorrowLenses or LensRentals might be the place to look. I make this suggestion is because better to spend a couple bucks to see if you like the combo.

I honestly don't believe at the price point you're looking at, you can make a bad decision IQ wise and within the major brands. Where you'll notice most is the ergonomics. Hold it, use it. Then decide.

I've used lensrentals several times and rented the Nikon 200-500mm lens, the Tamron 100-400mm lens and the Sigma 100-400mm lens.
I also rented the Nikon D7200 and ended up buying the Nikon D7200 and the Sigma 100-400 and am damn happy with the setup.

I have handled Sony / Canon and Nikon and in my experience I find the Nikon body's to be nice to handle, and their glass ( lenses ) are fantastic.
Being a cheap-azz I also find the Nikon equipment to be 1/3 of the price of Canon.

Not really seeing how you can find like lenses for a third the cost. A Canon EF 70-200 f/2.8 iii and its equivalent Nikon version are maybe $20 difference. Canon RF mount lenses are a bit more expensive due to stabilization and focus motors.

edit: I should add there are cheaper 70-200’s in both lineups but they are not the same and with Nikon, there are full frame lenses and APC sized lenses. Again, not the same.

You are corrrrrrrect sir - not sure what I was thinking but it will come to me in time - heck the Nikon 500mm F4 is like $2,000 more than the Canon ... I must have seen some lens that stuck in my head.

Bottom line is Canon / Nikon are probably the top-2 brands that I would consider. Sony is good too. Heck your IPhone13 takes a damn nice image these days.

Lens technology is changing to match newer focus and stabilization techniques. Trying to lighten larger lenses as well. There’s lots to choose from.

Right now I'm using a Canon 5D IV. This shot was taken with a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 lens. I generally prefer to take photos of urban decay--especially when its juxtaposed with natural beauty.
