OFFROAD or SPORT? Why?

I’ve noticed many OR owners defending the OR:
    1) I NEED a locker (I’ve used it 2 times already in the 5 years I’ve owned the truck).
    2) The garbage plastic useless SKEWP is ugly AF.
    3) Stock OR suspension is better. (Not a single piece of my suspension is stock though).

    Sport owners:
    1) I simply like the hood.
    2) I don’t offroad.

This is what new people wanting to buy a Tacoma become influenced by and then inherit these same feelings to post back on the forum:

It’s funny though, there’s really no other need to justify wanting an OR (or NOT wanting a Sport) besides the simple fact that you use it to offroad.

And for the Sport…well, not sure for people who want an AT. Maybe in that case it’s solely the hood that sold you on it. But for a MT, it’s an easy decision when you do zero offroading. A nonfunctional scoop is on the same playing field as someone rocking a wheeling setup purely for pavement.

I still would choose the Sport over the OR. Not just for the scoop but for me not doing off road maneuvers like I see the young guys do. Their Tacos go through hell going off road and the extra money they paid to do this. No sense to me at all unless you have lots of $$$$ or live in mommies basement. Scoop looks nice and drops granny panties too at my age.just saying

    Now that’s an idea...

Test drive both at high rates of speed through the pothole ridden infrastructure of New York City, and buy the one that doesn’t wreck.

It’s much easier to remodel your showroom when there are no cars in it.

New York State picked a good time to gut and remodel penn station. Ridership is down.

In 2014 I bought a sport because at the time you could not get the OR in a long bed. Now I'd get the DCLB OR.

I drove both at different times and I couldn't notice any difference between the two. At least not on the 2 mile round trip dealer test drive. Other than some light beach driving we don't do much off roading. Would have been happy with an SR5 but plan on keeping this truck for a long time so got the TRD Off Road for $2k more and to avoid buyers remorse for not getting the rear locker even if I never use it.

The off road and the sport I was looking at were priced similarly, like $500 difference.

I opted for the off road..

This winter we rented a cabin and I would not have been able to leave that steep icy driveway if I had chosen the sport

I wanted the locker - and AC + MT - b/c I wanted the truck to be able to do anything I need + I never wanna buy another truck again; got a car for the daily

I had to shop around for a 2nd gen, after 8-10months of searching and a 3hr one way drive, found a perfect one [at start of pandemic, before $$ went crazy] that was listed as a sport/auto but the VIN said otherwise + priced 2K lower, dealer said they made a pricing mistake but would honor the lower for me + even had it flatbed/ed to my house for free!

Not a fan of the 'soft' suspension but that is gonna go soon so whatever - love the truck, glad I didn't give up and get an auto 3rd gen.

I also hate the hood scoop ;) but that is a style thing/personal preference

That would depend on the tires not the truck. I have a Sport and this thing goes through snow and ice and have the stock tires that came with it. Firestone's Destinations and I live in snow country.

Sport, because my 2017 DCSB MT was on the lot. I love it, it has been a awesome daily truck for the last 5+ & 70k later. Many years and smiles to come.

    A bunch..and no build thread!
I got the OR because it was the one I wanted due to the locker and suspension.

Then I went and lifted it, gave away the stock suspension and got air lockers and a ton of other shit within 5 months of purchase..lol

    I didn't want a skewp.

    Can confirm this.

I absolutely love my DCSB 4WD SR5. I don’t do any insane wheeling, just some off-roading here and there. Tons of highway miles, long road trips with a lot of gear. I absolutely love my truck. It has everything I need and not a single extra thing.

Went sport because it was the only Cement on the lot and I wasn’t paying the TRD Pro price for Voodoo Blue at the time. I also very much preferred the color matched fender flares. That’s about it really.

100% true. When I bought my sport it had highway tires on it. In the snow the would easily spin the tires in 4wd. It wouldn't get stuck though. I changed the wheels and put all terrain tire on it and its a completely different truck.

Personally, I like the sport look. color matched flares and bumpers look a lot nicer than the black in my opinion. I just remember cars from 20-30 years ago with black bumpers looking like crap. See referenced picture.s-l1600.jpg

I chose sport due to wanting to keep this vehicle for the long haul, got a great deal, transport my fire dept gear, also not a lot off off road stuff on my side of TX. 99% of my commute is city/highway..

Sport if you need the space with a larger cab and 6' bed. OR if you see yourself off-roading often, or more importantly IMO, the resale value of a subjectively more desirable model a decade from now.

I got the Sport because I wanted a manual and long bed. HOWEVER I wish I had known that the factory stuffed a brake pressure equalizer thingy on the passenger side near the firewall where a 2nd battery would normally go because now I'm struggling to find a good spot to easily hold another battery. I don't want to put two heavy batteries up in front since I offroad and the stress has been shown to tear the thin aluminum up there. Otherwise I love my truck and very glad I chose this one!

Good lord, how many times are we going to have this stupid debate? I guess this is for the benefit of the new folks here, but damn this sure does get old fast.

We can only hope that someone asks what oil to use in their truck or how big of a tire they can get without installing a lift. Now those topics would be a refreshing change of pace.
