Best thing to do is never wash your truck. I’m going on 9 years of not washing the outside of my truck and it’s built a layer of protective dirt. I bet if I ever wash it, the paint will look brand new.

I believe it has something to do with the changes made to the EPA rules concerning automotive paints. I think CA lead the charge in this.

Then it would affect other car companies as well. Most other manufacturers seem to have it figured out.

Although nothing scientific to back up your claim - I have to agree. I recently sold a 2005 GMC Sierra 2500HD that lived outside (sometimes covered parking) and it got washed only when in the dealer for an oil change (basically 1 x year). Had it detailed (cheaply) before the sale and the truck looked better than I think it would have looked had I detailed/washed it myself every few weeks/months. It did take a little work to rejuvenate the black trim (nothing a little paint mixed solution) and polish for the chrome bits, but that was a quick and easy diy.

I generally do not wash/wax my trucks, but have never had an issue with paint/appearance "yet". I had a 2015 Taco that I sold last year and now a 2018 Tundra as my daily drivers and other than an occasional wash at the local gas stations automatic wash, they never get much love other than when cleaning up to remove off-road pinstriping. Life is too short to worry about an eventual depreciating asset. Maintain it mechanically sure, but I don't get wrapped up over appearances.

Every Taco in TX that lives outside loses it's clear. Unless it doesn't have it, then it fades.

Yes, wax will prevent but you have to really stay on top of it amd even then there seems to be a buffeting problem on hwy use. Mine seemed to be fine one day and thin two weeks later. From there it just went to crap. All when it was about 10 yrs. old or so.

My 09 paint started failing on the hood and roof. Roof was bad and started rusting so I sanded that down to metal, primed and painted. The hood was mostly a clear coat failure. Never got around to fixing that before the truck got totalled by a red light runner. Insurance only knocked $180 off the value for the paint lol.

Painting is such a pain. It’s not something that people can do themself. Need to have a compressor, gun, wipes, reducers, etc.

And I get it that washing a car and waxing it is a pain for most people. But the companies made it so easy. You can buy Maguires ceramic spray. Just wash you car, spray this stuff on, and rinse off and you are protected for 6 months

It won’t protect some Tacoma’s. All my cars are well taken care of. They are parked on the same driveway with the same sun exposure etc. My Tacoma is the only one with paint issues.

my 05 white paint started to fade back in 2010.

once a year, i buff it with polish then buf again with wax or synthetic wax.

y'all need to start doing the same, before you get rust on your body panels.

buffer is like 30$ at AutoZone or harbor freight

pads for buffer are maybe $10 for 3

bodywork repair from rust and then a new paint job is probably $5-10k....

it takes about an hour for me to wash, polish, wax from start to finish

there are a ton of options for polish and wax from $10 to $50 a bottle

most people don't understand how intricate the preparation process is.

i ended up getting the rust off my roof, preparing properly, but painting it with tractor paint and a brush. because it a lifted truck and no body will notice my shitty paint job LMFAO. but it's held up just fine.

2013 TRD, 160,000 miles still looking pretty good. Hope it stays that way ‘cause I plan on keeping it around for a good long while.

I feel your pain. But, with the cost of new/newer trucks being what they are, I can buy a heck of a lot of gas with that much money. So, my old Taco stays home. She looks good, she’s bullet proof and, best of all, she’s paid for.

LoL, because everything else on the vehicle that actually matters, keeps working with basic maintenance for 300k miles or more!

I've had other brands that needed major repairs at 30k but the paint was probably good forever hahaha.

Honda is just as good as Toyota and about the same monitary value. Mercedes is great, but expensive, so is BMW.

i have beat the shit out of my 2gen taco and it only failed me when the crummy aftermarket key stopped working... I've towed almost twice the rated payload across state lines without anything breaking.
these little trucks really are tough as fk
