I think the 4Runner has been more expensive for a long time. To be fair, it's a superior vehicle.

Minus being a little more top heavy then the Taco I would agree with you. The shorter wheel base would have been nice last weekend.

This is exactly why I try to keep as much weight as possible down low, and between the axles. I don't think they're that top heavy stock, though. I think people just have a tendency to put way too much weight on the roof.

If course my comment was tongue in cheek, as there are pros and cons to both. :)

I think once you option them similarly, the price difference is pretty minor.

Edit: honestly, if I were building a dedicated overlander, I might start with a Taco.

I did enjoy my 2nd gen. I just missed my station wagon.

Better enjoy it while we can!

I’m wondering what Dobinsons rear springs I will need. Also 2hr install seems a bit on the optimistic side.

    definitely!

See I was thinking for a dedicated overlander build a 4Runner would be a good place to start. But I'm also not a rooftop tent guy.

Short wheel base has its uses, and when you get on a big hill climb you're going to want that long wheel base. It all just depends on what you're doing. I like the utility side of tacos better, plus they still have manual transmissions.

Now if Toyota would have put the FJ manual in the 4Runner like they should have... Boy howdy

I'm not an RTT guy either. My idea involves ditching the whole bed and building a custom camper setup. Although, I could probably do a pretty nice setup with the 4Runner if I committed to it and just gutted the interior.

As far as short vs long wheelbase, the most legendary off-roaders are generally short wheelbase vehicles. I've seen situations where longer was better, though.

it’s not far off. They’ve been slightly higher since 2nd gens.

Early 2020 I could of bought a 2020 4Runner sr5 premium for $37,600. We missed that sale and ended up buying the 2021 4Runner sr5 premium for almost $41k

I'm never complaining again about the $25k it cost for my used 2015 with 80k miles.

Edit: Granted I've also now lost my mind doing mods/customizations making cost equivalent to a new truck but that's besides the point....

Shhh I've been semi lurking/very busy.... :anonymous:

But anyways I can't find a good answer here.
Power steering fluid needs a top off. I'll probs do the syringe to drain it and refill it. Our manual says atf fluid and Tacomaworld is saying dexron 2 ATF..

Some saying full synthetic some saying blend. What's the Wisconsin peoples ideas on it?

Also got my meso taillights but haven't had a chance to do an install yet.. :annoyed:

Dex 2 and 3 is basically the same; 3 replaces 2 ect. Just standard ATF is fine. 5 years on some cheap royal purple ATF in my rack and no issues.

Yup. Dex 3 replaced 2 and you can basically use either one. You'll probably only see things sayind Dex 3 on the shelves. Standard or synthetic, whatever you prefer. More crucial to have it full and properly bled than anything else.
