How difficult is it to replace a cylinder head on the 3rz? I think I had a spark plug blow out. Half the coil was completely gone and the plug looks half melted. I stuck a scope down the cylinder and it looks ok as far as I could see. Tried threading a new plug in and it started ok then broke loose, so I think the threads are toast.

Yea I discovered the spark plug repair inserts, I tapped the hole and put the insert in and it went alright aside from having to clean out the chips from the cylinder. I still have a cylinder 2 misfire though, so Im trying to figure out what else it could be.

This is what the plug and coil looked like btw:

That is literally all that was in the spark plug tube, the rest of the coil seems to have melted and went into the cylinder or something. Somehow the washer on the spark plug disappeared as well. I have absolutely no idea how this happens.

Anyone have a reman automatic transmission they recommend or who’s bought a reman/new transmission? Labor/shop costs are insane and lead times are to long. Not really interested in doing it myself at this point.

The part that stands out to me with that project was trying to get the control arms back in. My mounts are bent and things were tight. If I had an air chisel I don't think it would have been a bad job at all to remove the old tabs.

Well that was a bigger pain in the ass than I expected but boy she rides like a dream now! Had to cut out the main eye bolts and burn out the shackle bushings (lowers were fused, glad I got replacements). Couldn’t have done it without help from a bud.

I did the same thing and it's been holding up great.
Don't know who I got the idea from, but it might have been your thread

    20200315_121647.jpg 20200315_184006.jpg

Not bad at all. 4cyl motors are the easiest to do heads on imo. I was able to do mine in 1 weekend.

I got a replacement for mine from https://www.kingcylinderheads.com/
Comes pre shimmed and with new cam shafts and everything.

Don't forget about preloading the camshaft split gear. Put the bolt through the gear before pulling it otherwise you'll have a fun time trying to get it back aligned and preloaded.

That ones coming later this year. This frame is from @vonellis. This frame will be going on the 2002 double cab once I get it cleaned up and painted

The kid that brought me this frame is willing to go get miguels and bring it to SLC so I can come get it in august

FYI here’s my final tally, YMMV based on shopping around but expect about $600 or so

not including tools and consumables like cutoff wheels and copious amounts of grease (the shackles/bushings are a bitch to set)

Many Thanks! This information will be helpful when I head down this road. I bought an OEM e-lock rear axle off a junked Taco a couple months ago. I already have newer Bilsteins, but plan to do the leafs and other stuff when I swap out the axles...if I can ever find the time to do it!

If for what ever reason, you never find the time to swap out the rear axle, let me know and I'll gladly take the elocker axle off your hands. Lol
