Think I have the dreaded timing cover leak (although not serious at the moment. Mechanic says monitor it.)I park on a slight hill. Do you think it matters if I park facing up or down? One direction better than the other in terms of oil seeping through the timing cover? No difference?

Also, would high mileage oil help with the leak at all? I’m at 80k so probably wouldn’t hurt to start?

That sucks. Fellow 22 owner here, but only 1500 miles and nothing noticed yet.

My 17 model started this at 100,000 miles. It started with a spot on the ground about 4" in diameter every night. Dealership told me $2500 for the repair because the engine had to be pulled to fix it. I had them check to see if my warranty covered it, and it did 100%. So I wonder if the engine got pulled or if they actually have a secret "back door" way to do it when it's "free" work. LOL
Either way... it's fixed, and cost me nothing. So far, my warranty has saved me around $7500.

i think it would be better for the front to face uphill. it usually leaks from the front. but i doubt it makes any difference either way.

You want to know the truth? Most of them leak. I’ve owned seven Toyota trucks mostly second Generation with 4 liter V6. One of them leaked bad enough to leave a spot on the driveway. It was noticed by first owner and resealed by dealer.

The rest were very slow more like weep or sweating over time. This type of leak is rated on a scale of 1 to 10 with 10 being worst. The rest of mine were all rated 4 to 5. So slight that I didn’t have to add between oil changes. I find it humorous that some here would see a leak and freak out and sell the truck or spend thousands to chase this minor annoyance.

you’d be miles ahead to clean all the residential oil off then carefully monitor the oil level to see how bad it really is. The leaking is even mentioned in 1st Gen forums, it’s just another Toyota thing kinda like the rusty frame fiasco. Stop the worrying and love your truck for christ sake.

This is the V6, not the 4 cylinder 2TR-FE, correct? Is it just me or is there lots of problems with the V6 compared to the 4 cylinder? I know the 4 cylinder is slow but I can't believe the 4 cylinder is not more popular with so many less problems. The only thing I don't like about the 2TR-FE is that it has a plastic valve cover but all engines made after 2010 or earlier have plastic there, right? The iron core is still old school.

I have 6-8 drips of oil leaking a day. Believe me if it wasn’t leaving spots all over the garage floor, I would not be having them tear into it. I would rather leave well enough alone and not have the tear down and put back together possibly cause more issues after the fact. I love my Taco and all manufacturers will have their issues. Just hope this is the last one I have for ages.

I just checked my dad’s 2016 with 50k and it’s bone dry, no signs of any leak. My 2017 with 78k is seeping. Goes to show it is definitely hit or miss and not isolated to any specific year.

I used blue devil stop leak on my 07 prerunner and it worked just fine. Running it 3 months after and no problems yet with no more leaks on the timing cover.

My 2016 Tacoma Limited 4x4 at 120k miles, started to have the timing cover/power steering pump leak. My local dealer wants $7000 and a week to fix. Yes they will give me a loaner/rental car during that time. I am debating taking a long 3 day weekend and doing the repair myself. At 120k miles what else should I go ahead and replace. I have radiator hose and serpentine belt. Any items near their end of life at 120k miles?

Anyone have a parts list of all the gaskets I will need to replace? I know the timing cover, from what I have seen on this thread the value covers? water pump?

So far so good. I have 8,500 miles on it now and so far no leaks.

I had this leak/seep few weeks back at 71K, 3 days at dealership, $3200 paid through extended warranty. I had power steering pump leaking replaced at 50K under warranty. Suspicious now about that work being in same vicinity. Fingers crossed that problem solved for good.

It's a pretty common failure on all of the 3.5 V6's. Tacoma, Lexus RX350, Lexus ES350, etc. It's the main reason I bought the extended warranty on mine, I'm almost expecting it. I think it's one of those things that the manufacturer has decided it's cheaper to fix them than to retool especially with the 3.5 on the way out the door...

Yep pretty common for sure. Had a Camry and RAV4 with the 3.5 V6 leaks too. But was told they fixed it. Wasn’t expecting it to be there on my 2022 with 2,500 miles. Oh well. Hopefully it will not leak again!
