Hahaha! The upper number: 304B6000 shortened to 04B60. Typically, five characters are the shorthand for our ECU IDs, but some Toyotas use a couple more digits which can cramp my brain.

For example, my ECU ID is 04B14 for a 2017 3.5l MT on the latest TSB. Unfortunately (or thankfully?), there has not been a powertrain TSB for the 3rd Gen 2.7l. I feel that there should be one to address the AT shifting, but I guess Toyota doesn't.

 

I have a 21 AT I will check to see if my hand held scanner can pull up that information

Hey, for the 04A90 and 04B70 guys, use the new stock files at your own risk... I may have found a bug with them (regarding the VVT tables) that I notified Mat at VFTuner about earlier today. Will hear back soon.

Wait until there is a resolution to this issue before flashing to your truck.

@tonered I've got a guy in Dallas with 04A23, which I believe is a newer calibration for the 2017 ECUs that I'd never seen before. Trying to see if he can yank out the ECU and send to Mat to download and create a new stock file, but it's his only car, so it might be a logistics issue.

Edit: Also, I've got a decent 2.7L tune already, but nothing that I would license to strangers and charge for. I will have a 2.7L truck for a bit tmrw, and will be working on some refinements, and if I think you'll like it, it will be available for license one I get it thru Beta.

Edit 2: @tonered the 04B70 is for 2020s, I've plugged into one so far. Glad he's supported now... That's the one I'll be tuning tmrw if I hear back from Mat.

04A90 I believe is for the 2019 ECUs, but lemme verify that...

And 04A21 and 04A22 are for the same ECUs technically (04A21 was the original calibration for the 2016/2017 ECUs, but most of the 2017s ended up shipping with 04A22, and there exists a TSB to update the 04A21 guys to 04A22, and I can probably get it if anyone ever needs it). I have seen 04A21 on a 2017 before, but just tuned it as is, since there's 0 chance a Toyota tech would ever update a 2.7L unless it was throwing CELs.

 

Ha! I was showing that to my wife earlier. I told her that I found a glitch/mistake.
We are also missing a torque map that we had in earlier versions of vftuner.

 

I showed my wife too! Lol. She told me I'm a nerd.

 

@PapaRee I figure either he pasted the maps wrong, or the exhaust/intake labels are wrong (in which case its harmless, but I'm not touching it till I know which is correct)

Hopefully it gets fixed and those torque maps get added back.
I also noticed that the one torque map in there has 5000 rpm all the way down the map for engine speed. ECU will get confused with so many different values for one rpm.

 

Just heard back from Mat, he's fixing the 04A22 maps, both the 5000 y-axis tables on torque and the VVT maps. Turns out, it's the 04A22 maps that are incorrect (which is what I was comparing the new maps to) that were wrong. The 04A21, 04B70 and 04A90 maps are fine.

 

While you have his ear, make sure he puts back the Optimal transmission torque demand map. That whole section is not there (since 1.5)

Not that it's super necessary, since 04A21 is supported, but as a best practice to update first before tuning, I'll see if I can snag the TSB to get a 2016/2017 to 04A22 for you guys with TechStream.

 

There's a TSB? That news to me.

 

I imagine there has to be, since generally Toyota will increment their calibrations like 04A21, 04A22, 04A23, etc... as they come out with new calibrations for the same hardware. I can access TIS at work tomorrow, and will dig around.

 

Attached is the TSB for 04A22. I couldn't find anything for 04A23.

You may not realize it, but with the stock tune, the throttle input and the actual throttle opening are not directly correlated. After around 30% throttle input, the actual throttle opening is kept between 90 and 100% open, and the variable that keeps the power output correlated to throttle position is the transmission gear ratio/torque converter status. Basically any time you're over 2000 rpm, the actual throttle opening is very nearly completely open. This is not the case with cruise control however. When cruise control is turned on, the transmission is more willing to downshift before reaching nearly 100% throttle position. It's strange that the transmission operates so differently when cruise is on vs off.

I agree, I wish it was possible to lock the transmission in a given gear, and if it slows down, it just slows down. I also wish it was possible to lock the torque converter in 2nd and 3rd gear under load. My '20 2.7 has yet to lock the converter in 2nd, and it only locks the converter in 3rd when engine braking.
